Data and insider anecdote both point to a sudden and precipitous collapse in YouTube pretender NicoNico Douga’s popularity; in the face of such a reverse the talk of making Nico into national infrastructure seems mere hubris – it may be lucky to ever turn a profit, let alone expand overseas.
Might this have something to do with the recent supplication of Nico before its new masters? In all probability, yes; the graphs really speak for themselves on this.

NicoNico Douga bosses 夏野剛 / Takeshi Natsuno (a seasoned seller of mobile phone melodies parachuted in to try to stop the cash haemorrhage at Nico’s managing firm Niwango) and 西村博之 / Hiroyuki Nishimura (no less a man than the founder of 2ch and now Nico honcho) have given a most interesting interview on the future and past of NicoNico.
Much is revealed of their plans for expansion; notably we hear they intend to see NicoNico become a part of the national infrastructure of Japan, that they intend a plan of overseas expansion, just as soon as they have dealt with the trifling matter of losing millions of dollars, and that, yes, the biggest challenge facing them may indeed be kowtowing to the intellectual property cartels without wiping their servers bare.

Some extreme talent on display; as if the Stronger Idols weren’t example enough of the skill to be found on Nico, now we have this immaculate music video of the Lucky Star girls.

Non-Japanese speaking Idolmaster fans may be interested to see this English language (or at least Engrish) Idolmaster site “The Idolmaster MAD World Service”, billing itself as “The Gentleman’s Guide to the Idolmaster”. They serve up regular introductions to the latest MADs doing the rounds on NicoNico Douga, and have plenty of supplementary information and guides, which should be decipherable.
Probably most notably, and usefully (not to mention vexingly, for those of us with incompatible hosts), they have embedded Nico videos, so you can enjoy the latest without having to visit Nico itself, or make an account.

NicoNico Douga has prostrated itself before the might of Japanese intellectual property cartels such as the AJA, JVA and MPAA, and Nico maintainer Dwango is now their willing and obedient slave in all matters, we hear. They have supinely expunged all content the groups deem infringing (and not just limited to anime), so they must be excused if their servers are a little bare at present.

Singer Gackt has leant his voice to a new vocaloid, dubbed Gackpoid, and Berserk creator Kentaro Miura has apparently deigned to provide him with the design for the avatar, for free, visible above – quite a departure from his usual style, I’m sure you’ll agree.
You can hear samples of the synthetic crooning on the official site. The software is due on the 25th of July, at a cost of some ¥18,900. It does not look as if this avatar will readily lend itself to an appealing incarnation as a nendoroid… Via ITmedia.

You may be familiar with ニコニコ動画 / Nico Nico Douga, (“Smile Video”, though Miku Miku Douga would be a more appropriate name), the popular Japanese YouTube-a-like with the significant innovation of allowing users to comment onto the actual video itself – there is an excellent English explanation of the phenomenon here.
Now, just as there is YouPorn & PornoTube to the prudish YouTube, there is イクイク動画 / Iku Iku Douga (“ComeCome Video”) as an AV counterpart to Nico Nico. I can’t confess to having any interest at all in watching unseemly JAV strumpets squeal away under an enormous mosaic, much preferring the two-dimensional artistic and creative media so well developed in Japan, but maybe there are some to whom this is appealing (the huge AV industry is testament to this).
