The long awaited release of the new Slayers anime, Slayers Revolution, after an 11 year hiatus, is heating up with the start of the manga version, being serialised in Dragon Age – see here for some more detail. Whilst it would probably be an exaggeration to say the manga adaptations of Slayers have ever been highly regarded in comparison to the excellent anime and novels, it is heartening to see Lina Inverse and company back in action after such a long gap – who can doubt that Megumi Hayashibara will reprise her role with as much gusto as ever?

This is 田中ユタカ/Yutaka Tanaka. His stories tend to be more sentimental than the norm – or perhaps they are normal and the unsympathetic treatment is not. Anyway, they are full of warmth. He is extremely prolific (in fact there is a suggestion several authors use the same pen name, or at least that plenty of assistants are involved). You may also be familiar with the erotic anime adaptation of Virgin Night (初夜), based on his work. He has a slew of normal (non-H) manga published as well, but I am concentrating on the H part of his portfolio here.

One of my favourite manga, and in fact the first I ever read in the original Japanese, is よつばと!/Yotsuba&!, by 東清彦/Kiyohiko Azuma. It is an entertaining and easygoing manga, with good art and story, so that alone is enough to recommend it; it is a best seller in Japan so many would agree. However, I think it also happens to be the ideal beginner’s manga for learning Japanese, for several compelling reasons.

This is by 吉富昭仁/Akihito Yoshitomi. He has published a variety of manga and had some of his works adapted into anime, but in my opinion his greatest achievement is “BLUE DROP ~天使の僕ら~”, not to be confused with the other Blue Drop titles bearing different subtitles, a short (2 volumes) and light hearted manga series which, whilst staying firmly on the side of mere ecchiness rather than being actually adult, nevertheless manages to approach much more explicit material with the perverse situations and demented story premises on offer. A thoroughly enjoyable, if a little bizarre, read; I reproduce a few interesting (H) parts here.

This is Robot magazine, a beautiful, large format, full colour manga magazine/serial artbook under the direction of Range Murata (村田蓮爾; also a contributor), who may be familiar to you as the character designer of the anime Last Exile (highly recommended), amongst others. Yoshitoshi Abe (安倍吉俊) (involved in various capacities with Serial Experiments Lain (a favourite), Texhnolyze (another favourite), Haibane Renmei, NieA_7, etc) is also regularly featured. It is pricey and slim compared to the more mainstream phonebook sized manga compilations, but the quality of art included is second to none. Perhaps the cover price is a small price to pay for supporting these artists? Read the rest of this entry »

Hello, and welcome. For the introductory post, it would be helpful to explain a little about the idea behind this site, and the name, Sankaku Complex, which is intended to capture something of the relationship between anime, manga and games, as well as such media forms as eroge and the visual novel.
