Courts Tell Nintendo Piracy “Adds Functionality”


Nintendo has suffered a rare courtroom reverse in its efforts to discourage rampant piracy on its Nintendo DS system, with courts telling it that flash cartridges “add functionality,” even if they admit most of this functionality is intended to enable copyright infringement.

Nintendo Crucifies DS Pirate: 30 Months & $100,000


Nintendo’s campaign against piracy has scored another victory with a Nintendo DS pirate being handed a two and half year prison sentence and force to pay $100,000 in penalty, after he made a game available for free download.

Nintendo Crushes DS Piracy with New Firmware


Nintendo has introduced new copy protection features into the latest firmware for its new DSi handheld, rendering all previous flash cards (or majikon in Japanese parlance) obsolete.

DS Hack “Right to Buy” Sales Soar on Ban


Attempts to sell the popular Nintendo DS hack devices, known as “majikon” and usually used to allow illegal copies to be run on the console, have recently soared on Yahoo Auctions Japan, but with a new twist; rather than selling the device, sellers are now selling “a right to buy the device”, which they appear to be unfailingly converting into an actual device.

This is a surely a direct result of the recent ban Nintendo established on the device.

Nintendo Gets DS Chip Ban


A Tokyo district court has finally awarded Nintendo the ban on “Majikon” and similar devices, usually used to circumvent copy protection on games for the Nintendo DS.

The ban, long sought by Nintendo and a coalition of five game makers, bans import sales of the devices, and prevents the sale of such stock as is in the region. Major online auction sites now prohibit dealing in the tools.

Nintendo Heads League to Crush Modchips


Nintendo have taken umbrage at the distribution of backup devices aimed at their DS handheld, and have, together with a massive alliance of 54 other companies, many of them big players, opted to hound the offending companies out of existence with a lawsuit.

The device they are targeting is the R4 Revolution (actually a flash cartridge), and their strategy is to sue five of the companies involved in the Japanese distribution of the device.
