The light novel – a genre which at its loosest could be defined as any novel with an anime-style cover, periodic illustrations and, of course, a sparsity of text inversely proportional to the length of its title – having apparently long since outstripped manga and visual novels as the premier source material for late night anime adaptations, it is only fitting that the best such adaptations be ranked by the viewers who lap them up.

The latest excess of the light novel title generator to receive its obligatory anime adaptation is Ore no Kanojo to Osanajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru (loosely, “My girlfriend & childhood friend are constantly at each others throats,” and thankfully abbreviated to Oreshura) – and though its contents look to be as formulaic as its title, it has nonetheless been well received and even boasts some high level nopan service in its first outing.

Newly airing boob anime Maoyuu Maou Yuusha (“Overlord & Hero”), based on the novelisation of a story found on 2ch, has already proven well received, thanks in no small part (in fact to two huge parts) to the busty and heavily animated charms of its sexy evil overlord anti-heroine and her squad of henchmaid lackeys.

Barely had the conclusion to Sword Art Online aired than fans were baying for the second season – though perhaps more thanks to the overall quality of the series than the quality of the finale, which seems to have been treated more as a prelude to the adaptation of the rest of the novels…

Even normally tolerant SAO fans have been stuck picking apart the innumerable plot holes and anime battle clichés the 23rd episode’s thrilling climax finds itself riven with – the conclusion being that “it is best not to think to hard about what you’re watching with SAO,” not the first time such complaints have been made…
