
NicoNico Douga bosses 夏野剛 / Takeshi Natsuno (a seasoned seller of mobile phone melodies parachuted in to try to stop the cash haemorrhage at Nico’s managing firm Niwango) and 西村博之 / Hiroyuki Nishimura (no less a man than the founder of 2ch and now Nico honcho) have given a most interesting interview on the future and past of NicoNico.
Much is revealed of their plans for expansion; notably we hear they intend to see NicoNico become a part of the national infrastructure of Japan, that they intend a plan of overseas expansion, just as soon as they have dealt with the trifling matter of losing millions of dollars, and that, yes, the biggest challenge facing them may indeed be kowtowing to the intellectual property cartels without wiping their servers bare.

In a shocking act of wanton cruelty, a lady exhibiting considerable sadism has distributed videos of herself viciously torturing and then rather thoroughly killing an unfortunate kitten, stamping it into a bloody pulp, with eyes popping forth, in a disturbing re-enactment of similar acts of brazen cruelty a few years ago.

As you may have noticed, there have been some disruptions to Sankaku Complex’s hosting, basically a consequence of healthy traffic growth: in this respect I suppose it could it could be taken as an indicator of success, but I must still offer my apologies to those inconvenienced; your forebearance and understanding in this matter are greatly appreciated.
The change in platform (it is a mystery to me how Apache became market leader considering its abysmal performance in certain situations, and I also find it strange that opcode caching isn’t a standard feature of PHP) should be able to accommodate future growth without difficulty, and will enable continued improvements, so hopefully no further problems will be evident. If you do happen to have any problems or suggestions, please do not hesitate to make them known.

The previously discussed efforts to protect the children from the wickedness of the Internet, by censoring their access to it, are set to become law, having passed with the unanimous assent of the House of Representatives (lower house, the one with most of the power); it will go before the House of Councillors next week, and then fully come into effect.

A 16 year old girl committed suicide, hanging herself, apparently in response to a “Die!” comment on her blog, leaving little doubt as to her motivation with a will laying stating her pains. She was said to be in shock after some earlier problems with classmates, and was taking a break from school, so it may be that this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Not content with one of their number hysterically proposing adult games be subject to severe censorship, now the Democratic Party of Japan (the main leftist opposition party) has proposed a regime of mandatory inspection and authorisation for sites containing “harmful” information, obligating PC manufacturers and cell phone companies to install filtering software, with harmful sites judged by some sort of NGO. Naturally, this move is to protect children from the evils of the Internet.
