The Hobby Complex GK01 (Hobikon GK) was held recently, and had as its name suggests, a focus on garage kits – kits of unpainted resin that require assembly and painting by the hobbyist, rather than the much more numerous pre-painted PVC figures that make up the vast share of the figure industry.
A niche interest perhaps, but still an event worthy of notice for fans of figures, and especially so for garage kit enthusiasts who were deprived of this season’s Wonder Festival due to last year’s near-fatal accident.

Good Smile Company recently held a follow up mini-event to their large Wonder Hobby 9 (WonHobi 9) figure event, appropriately called WonHobi 9.5. As the first event revealed all the newest announcements there wasn’t much in the way of new releases to ogle, but there are still a good number of new photos of upcoming releases to admire.
Also, one of the most prominent new releases unveiled at WonHobi 9, the quasi-gothic Hatsune Miku Black Rock Shooter was given a release date, something that should be of interest to many…

The official Macross F itasha famed for its superb quality and highly ero artwork of Ranka Lee and Sheryl Nome in nude, provocative poses (explicit enough to draw police attention) received a redecorating at the recent anniversary event celebrating the launch date of the SDF-1 Macross in the originals series’ timeline.
The two songstresses adorn the majority of the itasha, as expected, but the image selected for the van’s roof is quite a shocker…

Japan’s biggest figure event, Wonder Festival (WonFes), had been on an uncertain hiatus since the escalator accident of WonFes 2008 Summer, but event goers will be elated to know the 2009 Summer event will resume, albeit not at the Big Sight, but at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba.
WonFes 2008 Winter was set to open this February, but the controversy over the refusal of the event’s organizer (Kaiyodo) and the Tokyo Big Sight to accept responsibility for the non-lethal accident which injured 10 people (including some broken limbs) forced the cancellation of the Winter event and has apparently spurred the WonFes to abandon the famed Big Sight in favor of the Messe center.

Otaku are being supported in their battle against what they see as the unfounded bias against relationships with 2D characters, exemplified by the glamourisation of relationships with real women visible in events such as Valentine’s Day, by a not unlikely ally: top doujinshi retailer Mandarake has devoted its flaghip Akiba store’s famed show window to an exhibition of all the best 2D wives an otaku could hope to collect.

Speculation concerning Billy Herrington’s arrival in Japan to attend today’s WonHobi 9 figure event proved to be correct – the bisexual former gay porn star will be receiving his own Figma action figure, complete with dumbbells, a shower stall, and sweat towel.
Aniki’s (Big Brother in Japanese, as he is usually known) claim to fame in Japan is, of course, the meme in which clips of his porn antics are inserted into other, unrelated Nico videos for comedic effect. Presumably the accessories included with the Figma are there so buyers can recreate memorable scenes from his most famous piece, GachiMuchi Wrestling.
