Nintendo Strikes Back: 8 Years for DS Modchip Seller

A man convicted of importing 20,000 “majikon” devices, used to circumvent copy protection on the Nintendo DS, has been sentenced to 8 years in prison in a case which represents a victory for Nintendo and its efforts to stamp out sales of the popular devices.

The Haruhi DS game previously forecasted for release last year has finally been released, no doubt timed to coincide with the the start of the second season.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Chokuretsu (The Series of Haruhi Suzumiya) is a standard anime tie-in adventure game, interspersing visual novel scenes with various DS-style minigames.

Japanese Schools Make Nintendo DS Compulsory

A regional board of education has implemented plans which compel some 10 elementary and middle schools to distribute Nintendo DS handheld consoles amongst their pupils, along with appropriate software.

Starting in January, the schools began distributing the devices and software to children.

DS Hack “Right to Buy” Sales Soar on Ban

Attempts to sell the popular Nintendo DS hack devices, known as “majikon” and usually used to allow illegal copies to be run on the console, have recently soared on Yahoo Auctions Japan, but with a new twist; rather than selling the device, sellers are now selling “a right to buy the device”, which they appear to be unfailingly converting into an actual device.

This is a surely a direct result of the recent ban Nintendo established on the device.

Nintendo Gets DS Chip Ban

A Tokyo district court has finally awarded Nintendo the ban on “Majikon” and similar devices, usually used to circumvent copy protection on games for the Nintendo DS.

The ban, long sought by Nintendo and a coalition of five game makers, bans import sales of the devices, and prevents the sale of such stock as is in the region. Major online auction sites now prohibit dealing in the tools.
