Are Japanese women really more concerned about the size of their breasts than anything else, as so many media tend to portray them as? A ranking of which body parts survey respondents most commonly feel they have a complex about answers the question – the content of the first few items should come as no surprise, although their order might.

The recycled petition for an adult game and anime ban prepared for the Diet’s attention recently seems to be not the only such petition readied; unusually, we hear of another petition demanding action on loli porn, but this one is in support of freedom of expression, seeking full legal recognition rather than a ban.

Another petition has been put before the Diet, once again demanding a ban on the sale and production of “bishoujo adult anime magazines and adult simulation games”, or ero-anime, ero-manga and eroge in normal language, this time with 10,000 signatures.

Lolicon continue to exert themselves in defiance of government efforts to criminalise their harmless activities, and seem to have had some success, gathering more than 20,000 signatures on the petition which was held over C74, with a great many significant figures in the industry and beyond voicing their support for the efforts. They vow to continue the struggle.

Though it would appear to be a dead letter for the time being, the Japanese government’s attempted encroachment on artistic freedom of expression has not been forgotten; the campaign opposing criminalisation of artistic depictions of sexual activity involving younger participants (hereafter, delicious cake) has been gathering momentum, and can now boast a substantial list of names affirming their support for the cause, in the form of a lengthy petition.

The recent moves to strengthen laws against pornography involving underage participants opted to consider what to do about 2D loli separately, and the Diet has now decided what to do about this – it will ignore the matter for three years, and then decide how (if) to reform the law based on the results of an investigation. This might be considered a skilful dodge of the whole messy issue.

The editorial staff of adult game magazine PC Angel neo have issued an official statement in response to the call for a ban on adult games, and as might be expected they are rather scathing of it, if in a rather polite and restrained way (though any other sort of statement would doubtless be to cast oil onto the flames).

The previously discussed efforts to protect the children from the wickedness of the Internet, by censoring their access to it, are set to become law, having passed with the unanimous assent of the House of Representatives (lower house, the one with most of the power); it will go before the House of Councillors next week, and then fully come into effect.

The recent political attacks on the adult game industry seem to have stirred up a hornet’s nest in defence of the eroge makers, but the makers themselves seem to other concerns, claiming their industry is in imminent danger of mass bankruptcy, not due to the depredations of populist politicians, but due to that most reviled nemesis of software developers everywhere, piracy.

“Adult game players have their minds destroyed, they lose their very humanity”. With these words, from the recent petition to ban eroge, and their other initiatives, the Democrats seem to have provoked a storm of protest.
A mountain of such responses as “So shouldn’t AV also be banned?”, “Is there any scientific basis for this?”, “I’m a married woman with children who plays these games” are evident; I’m sure you get the picture, many are very annoyed, and seem more vocal than those advocating the ban (who seem to be limited to DPJ party hacks, strangely enough).
It remains to be seen whether this will truly backfire for the Democrats, although that does seem increasingly possible (not that there was any real chance of success in the first place).

Not content with one of their number hysterically proposing adult games be subject to severe censorship, now the Democratic Party of Japan (the main leftist opposition party) has proposed a regime of mandatory inspection and authorisation for sites containing “harmful” information, obligating PC manufacturers and cell phone companies to install filtering software, with harmful sites judged by some sort of NGO. Naturally, this move is to protect children from the evils of the Internet.

The Japanese Diet is set to hear a petition for legislation which would effectively ban the vast majority of eroge and adult anime (and probably, by extension, adult manga, though this is not stated), as the petitioning party is particularly het up about portrayals of minority age females.
