
It seems the influence of Japanese culture continues to make inroads; we hear that the Concise Oxford English Dictionary has in its latest revision added the word “cosplay” to its pages, defining it uncontroversially as dressing up as Japanese anime and manga characters, etc.
As Jabro points out, this does leave open the question of whether the definition includes non-Japanese cosplay, but the “etc” would seem to cover that. This is reported in the pages of a recent edition of the Nikkei Shimbun.

On the heels of the recent flood of shrine maiden goodness comes a related new development in the cutthroat world of Akiba cosplay cafes, where just about any gimmick will be tried in the hopes of becoming the next maid boom, in the form of a new miko café, called appropriately enough 巫女さんかふぇ / Miko-san Café.

A popular regional cosplay event has been cancelled by a single complaint made by an old woman. “In a place for enjoying flowers for everyone from children to old people, what sort of a place is this for a big gathering of young people?” was the criticism offered.

The festering genre of Japanese AV which incorporates cosplay seems to be riding the wave of Eva resurgence, and is set to get some new and truly tawdry looking NGE action. I suppose it cannot be helped that the same system which gives us copious dojinshi also allows us these kind of derivative works. Via NekoAreBlog.

KFC’s Colonel Sanders will no longer be dressed as a maid at KFC Akihabara – by order of the management. By way of Akibablog, with more details at AkibaOS. Understandable that they wouldn’t get away with this for long.

The fallout from the recent arrest of a certain self publicist and mass media hysteria (Akihabara is a “lawless area”) has continued apace. Firstly, an anti-street performance patrol group was formed to hound off anyone thinking of engaging in such. After this, several conspicuous voices of protest arose: here we have a man dressed as a nurse proclaiming he will not strip (thankfully!), and here an impromptu speech is televised before the perpetrator is taken away; his “heart was stolen by gundam” indeed.
