NicoNico Douga bosses 夏野剛 / Takeshi Natsuno (a seasoned seller of mobile phone melodies parachuted in to try to stop the cash haemorrhage at Nico’s managing firm Niwango) and 西村博之 / Hiroyuki Nishimura (no less a man than the founder of 2ch and now Nico honcho) have given a most interesting interview on the future and past of NicoNico.
Much is revealed of their plans for expansion; notably we hear they intend to see NicoNico become a part of the national infrastructure of Japan, that they intend a plan of overseas expansion, just as soon as they have dealt with the trifling matter of losing millions of dollars, and that, yes, the biggest challenge facing them may indeed be kowtowing to the intellectual property cartels without wiping their servers bare.

Hoping to break into (or rather, create) the English (or at least something approximating it) language market for bishoujo games/hentai games/eroge is new entrant MangaGamer (replete with a poorly designed Engrish site), with their site set to open for business on July 10th, offering digital download editions of a variety of less well known titles, to start with at least.

This manga, published in 1982 as “My Computer God – The Story of Bill Gates” (マイコンの神さま ビル・ゲイツ物語), in KoroKoro Comic, is a fascinating piece of history, and quite amusing to boot. As a piece of history, it harkens back to a time when Bill Gates was the Larry Page or Sergey Brin of his day, a dynamic entrepreneur in charge of an up and coming venture company, a far cry from the monolithic titan of corporate America Microsoft would later become. The entire story is translated below.

DVD and video industry group the Japan Video Software Association (JVA) has issued a long and unambiguously worded complaint to the effect that personal recording of shows, particularly anime, damages its potential bottom line, so can’t something be done to rectify this, preferably involving payout to the JVA.
Close reading of their demands in fact reveals their sales are healthy, but they are being damaged “potentially”.

Head of top Anime TV station Animax, 滝山雅夫 / Masao Toyama, has said his greatest fear is that anime will lose popularity amongst the young, and seems set on trying to rectify matters, if in a modest way.
His statement was made amidst celebration of Animax’s tenth anniversary, with a long and glorious stable of anime (Dragonball, Gundam, etc.) stretching out behind it, mostly being distributed on a tried and true fee based model.

Citing concerns over global warming, politicians in several large Japanese cities have started talking about banning or harshly regulating convenience stores open late at night, or 24/7. The areas pushing this, with Kyoto, Saitama and Kanagawa mentioned, seem to be looking to burnish their credentials as “model” environmentally friendly cities, whatever the inconvenience and cost to inhabitants and local businesses.

Regrettable news for fans of delicious cake; Yomiuri reports a price rise has been announced. Just what impact this will have on Lolita sales is unclear, but it seems likely that those with a sweet tooth will be hit in the pocket.

A high school teacher helped herself to ¥4,400,000, earmarked for the school student council, and then treated herself with some shopping. The teacher, in her 40s, fiddled the books over a yearlong period, using the pilfered cash to pay down her debts and rack up even more debts with shopping and high life.
She was sacked for her creative accounting, though we do not hear of any criminal charges, perhaps since she paid back the “borrowed” funds; the headmaster also made amends by forgoing a month’s salary for not bothering to do any auditing, and for stamping all her receipts. A subtle connection there, perhaps? Via Sankei.

“They were for me to enjoy myself with”, he laments. A high school teacher has just been arrested on suspicion of violating laws against child prostitution and pornography; his crime? He attempted to arrange some pants and photos thereof from a high schooler, on a pants trading site, a common enough pastime amongst Japanese teachers, it would appear.

With Metal Gear Solid 4 complete, all the details regarding the marketing arrangements in the game have come to light. It seems the game will be a vehicle for product placement on an unprecedented scale for an A-List title, with 10 product “collaborations” evident; but it is not so much the number as the prominence and lack of consideration for fit which stand out. Read on for the full details.

Two rather similar stories come to my attention via Itainews, one alleging that Japanese youth are suffering from a decline in literacy and historical knowledge, and another asserting the Japan’s sex trade is facing dire straits because young men no longer have the sex drive they once had (presumably they are pursuing alternatives rather than abstinence, although the article doesn’t address this for reasons which will become obvious).
