These should have been disallowed as they can cause bugs, and in particular these users will not be able to receive personal messages.
Anyone wanting their username changed to fix this should get in touch, and anyone discovering their username to have stopped working should try the clean version as seen in the URL to their profile – apologies for the inconvenience.
