Skepticism is to be used here comedically, as kirk and spock would remain skeptical that the end has come to an investigation when they are lead to a dead end within that investigation by the bad guys that perpetuated the investigation in the first place.

Another way to put it, is that we shall say we remain skeptical of others should they announce themselves a member of the opposite sex or should they announce the brilliance of a production to which the rest of us do not know, or even when they say ‘god is good’, or even when someone says that enlightment will never occur, the internet will never be free or that computers will never be truly-user-friendly.
