TV causes psychological damage to children

  1. I was approached by my school newspaper about a study on how TV can hurt children. The study is based on this. Questions I was asked.

    1. Did you grow up watching, following animation?
    2. What is your reaction to this study? Do you think there's truth in the study? Is it definitive?
    3. Do you think in any way watching animation has benefited your personal development? or does it in any way do harm?

Well I think you know how I'm gonna reply. Any thoughts you wanna share?

  3. Lol at the Miku cosplayer in that pic.

The article sounds badly written, with much bias in the last paragraph. I would like to know what's on that questionare, though.

They live in a world of make believe, but it is not a creative world of their own imaginations. It is a world created by adults. The psychological effect is damaging.

Also, couldn't the same logic be applied to books?

  6. Boredom equals answering stuffs!
1.Indeed I did, what else of interest did they show on that box? Mind you back then allot more of the animations where better than what they generally show today (at least around here).

    2. Animation hurting it? Well not the ones I've been watching but perhaps the ones they generally show these days...
I really think all those reality shows are worse...

    3. Benefited, yes. Harmed... well I've always been a bit of a loner but I doubt that's the reason.

To lazy to evaluate any more.

  7. Hmmm...
    Intriguing.
However there are many factors that come into play IMHO.
Is this study for present or stretches back.

TV now is quite different from TV 20 years, I don't mean technology wise but program wise.
Where I live most of the local TV is filled with stupid cheesy drama stories which have been reused for the last 15 years. If kids grow up seeing only that, it's certainly gonna mess them up.
I grew up watching sesame street, old super sentai/metal hero/kamen rider shows, and various anime, cartoons movies. I think I turned out just fine.
But I can't say the same for the newer generation, they seem to be more easily distracted.

    Just passing through.

  9. 1. Yes.
    2. I think it is a moronic study with vaguely-defined parameters and no definitive evidence.
    3. No I hate animation

Not to mention the fact that nothing is really original and there are people like me who can use the premade information/scenarios to create our own by mixing and matching.

  11. "psychologically harmful" is such a subjective point of view. They're saying in the article that it impairs their creativity, and puts them in to an imaginary world. Saying that doesn't really mean anything though. Just because their not as creative and imaginative as they could be, another point might improve. You can't just say TV is harmful to children.

For example, I could say that school is harmful to students because it forces them to conform and assimilate in to society, loosing their individuality. Is it true? Probably. Is it a bad thing? Who the hell knows?

  12. TV by it's self is not damaging it's only when combined with bad parenting that you have a problem.

If you have a problem child and want to know who is to blame just look in the mirror and you'll see the culprit.

  14. TV can't cause psychological damage! It's what in the TV!

    I seen a quote somewhere:

"If you blame the media for all the psychological damages, you might as well blame the automobile industry for all the physical damages."

  19. I don't see TV doing any worse damage than video games, internet, abusive parents and a heavily ready supply of ritalin already do. hooray for the "pass the blame" generation!

  20. Too much time studying and learning has also been know to cause social damage to people as well. Ever notice how the truly smart are often loners and have few friends?

I sure as hell know. I have first hand knowledge.

Being stupid is repairable, being smart is permanent.

You'll have more friends and fit in more if you're no different than the rest.
