If you think the votes of such minority affect the big picture you're being delusional, Nin.

Here in Brazil everyone has to vote too, I'm pretty sure that the ammount of "crazy" people isn't big enough to change the person being elected, even if it was as big as 1% (which is A LOT) and they all voted for the same person (which is downright absurd) it wouldn't make any difference.

If the votes of ten insane people made a difference to the elections, then those ten people have effectively "affected the big picture".

  6. Probably not since they would've probably voted for different people too.

Also, in what kind of fairy tale would the amount of schizophrenic people be big enough to break up an election?

Like I said, even if the numbers were as absurd as 1% it would probably not matter. Anyways, crazy people and dumb people, I don't see much of a difference anyways, the odds of them getting things wrong is about the same, it's like rolling a dice.

And even if several hundred people really managed to affect an election it'd be so close already that I doubt people would dislike their new president so much, yes? 50,0001% versus 49,9999%.

Of course, my example was a bit exaggerated. Also, everything you said in the above post is right, but the point stands that the elections would turn out a little better if the tiny portion of insane people don't vote. And I'm not really against the idea of excluding criminals from the right to vote for this reason either.

It probably also wouldn't be a bad thing if dumb people wouldn't vote, except that isn't viable because often times dumb (or rather, uneducated) people make up the pretty important lower working class, which is a group that can't be ignored politically.

Somehow that made me imagine the use of IQ tests before voting...
"Right, everyone that gets less than 90 points can go home!"

  9. Dumb people have to vote because the ones that need help the most are the masses. If only people with access to education voted you can rest assured that they'd just manage to keep their class as the only one to receive education anyways.

Anyways, when everyone HAS to vote it's pretty easy to outshine the minorities, here in Brazil a president can only be chosen when he/she has more than 50% of approval, therefore if out of 5 people (usually) no one managed 50%, there is a second round of votes narrowed to the top two voted before, so even if they are forcing you to chose one of those they are always going to have at least 50% of people voting for them. Therefore, at least in Brazil, criminals or deficient people would probably never make any noticeable difference and even if they did it's because the elections were close enough that it's hard to blame on them.

    No that's your political system.

  11. Back on topic, you guys were discussing a meritocracy. Basically, a democratic system where you have to prove your eligibility to vote by some method. It might be certification from a psychologist, an IQ test, or something else.

Most people tend to see these things as elitist, but I personally don't have too much of a problem with the concept. It's the execution that really buggers this up.

A system where you have to prove the eligibility of the politicians before they can even candidate would be even better :)

That's supposed to happen by having the public scrutinize the history and platform of a candidate.

But this usually just turns into bullshit in the States, and to a lesser degree in Canada as well.

I used to be in favour of this model as well, but I'm afraid it would lead to neglect of the less educated class.

  15. With politicians it's not really like you have much of a choice - you only can try to vote for someone who is less of an idiot than the others...
Your freedom is only that you can decide to which idiot you give a vote, that's all...

  16. Obama in Air Gear was awesome. Especially when he switched bodies with Adachi.
