    I'm saying that the Athenians made some terrible choices, but as they weren't the center of the world so they could afford to make them. I would also like to point out that the founding fathers looked to Athens for what Not to do.

    And I'd also like to point out Switzerland isn't a major world player either, also they have a lot less people to worry about screwing up than the US does.

    At this point in time I might remind you that the country with the most technological/medical/pretty much everything advances come from the United States, or from US partnered Co-ops.

    And here I ask you to quote things that are relevant to the success of a nation like GDP. I'll even provide an image to illustrate.

    Switzerland beats America in Health Care, Education and Business Competition.

    Life Expectancy:

    (Please note that America is ranked last, 33rd, even Mexico and Brazil beat it, looked at three charts).

    While European Union has nothing to do with Switzerland, take a look:
    European Union GDP: $16.447 Trillion
    USA GDP: $ 14.256 Trillion

    By the way, which country would you say is better? The country with more jarheads or a country with more citizens who are smarter, happier and have more disposable incomes?

    By the way, you should accept the fact that Americas power in the world is declining, though I wonder who will takes its place after it collapses or fade into obscurity (its almost certain, theres almost nothing redeemable about America except the MIC).

    Athens was a small and homogeneous city state with a voting population of about 10000-20000 in which almost everyone knew each other and most people had shared interests. You can't compare it to the United States, where direct democracy is not feasible due to logistic reasons arising from the country's size and because of the number of different interests that need to be represented.

    Switzerland is also hard to compare because it's still a small and comparatively homogeneous country (disregarding the language issues). In addition, it's a very prosperous country with low levels of poverty and whose size allows it to reap the benefits of being a tax haven. It doesn't have to face the same issues as a country with a population in the tens or hundreds of millions.

    It is possible, its just that the thought of such a huge undertaking frightens us. And we are somewhat stuck thinking in that eras way, we have many technologies to help us to make it possible, ever thought of internet? Sure, there are security reasons etc etc, but I am just suggesting. Our greatest failing as human beings is that we are afraid to take monumental tasks unless a strong leader appears such as Alexander the Great.

    To Chanblog, by any chance, are you referring to Communism and Capitalism (dichotomy), and you plan to temper them together to create a socialistic government like the Europeans?

    I don't find interdiction of a person's right to vote a bad measure for criminals. It's certainly true that a democracy in its purest sense should allow everyone to vote, but note that no country in the world is currently a pure democracy. And no country should be, because democracy brings with it a couple of nasty side-effects that can so easily be helped. Besides criminals, those who have been diagnosed with a mental illness also can't vote. It's a fine measure to protect the state from those who don't have the right mindset to affect the political situation.

    Bashing America and calling it a country full of stupid people sure seems to be the popular thing to do these days, but try to keep it to a minimum, especially where it doesn't really add much to the dicussion. Also, where did you get the idea that "the typical European is educated"? Europe on average is equally educated to the US.

    I believe that comes from shows interviewing Americans who don't know what KFC stands for, believes that Egypt is somewhere in the US etc. There are smart US citizens, but the stupids ones make better news. And it also didn't help that the country was represented by Bush for so long.

    Europe by contrast is made out of old old cities dotted with museums, giving the impression that it is more cultured, which leads to the assumption that Europeans are more educated people.

    After WWI and the economic collapse in Germany it's no big shocker that people would follow whoever was charismatic enough to take the center stage. As for the Holocaust and whatnot, Jews have been persecuted in Europe since times of antiquity, so the HITLER DID IT trick won't work here. Germany was an atom bomb ready to explode and we're lucky it didn't do more permanent damage.
