Basically what The Envoy said.

Yes. But it means no major labels, I guess, as opposed to not being very popular.
There's always grey area; you can't trust a list on one website (especially not Wikipedia). Tom Waits is considered indie, and he's signed to Island Records, a subsidiary of UMG. It's just down to the majority's opinion on each individual musician's place.

In recent times most people associate a certain 'sound' to indie as well. For instance, even though most dubstep producers are signed to small labels, most people wouldn't consider dubstep music 'indie'.

I prefer to think of it two ways: indie as a classification, and indie as a genre. It's classified that way when an artist isn't signed to a major label, but they can still have a mainstream sound. Indie as a genre is the more familiar definition, in which the artists break conventional rules of music.

I see it more as artists conforming to a different set of conventions, while staying within the larger 'rock music' genre. For instance, I think most people would consider stuff like this to be niche rather than indie:
"Indie", to me is a style...I guess. Anyway...
Going off the 'genre' interpretation of the word indie, here's Band of Horses for anyone who hasn't heard them. They're one of the most well known 'indie' groups, and for good reason!
Okay, hopefully that's enough for now. Maybe I can throw up some non-super-popular indie tomorrow.
One more popular indie band before I go to bed. Wolf Parade.

I like this one.
For the record, this is what I think of when I hear "indie":

Fang Island. The up-and-coming star of the hipster community.(Warning to those prone to epileptic seizures: You may want to refrain from watching this video, particularly in full-screen with the lights off).
That's all for tonight.
p.s. if this page loads slow, you might want to look into the flashblock plugin for firefox.
Here. This time I put them in order of exposure. Most popular first, least popular last.. And I know the bands I've been posting aren't all 'indie', but whatever. Close enough.
Sufjan Stevens.
Junior Boys(have posted this video once before in the 'what are you listening to' thread).
Pinback.
Tortoise. This band is mostly instrumental and is probably not even close to indie, but their sound is really popular with the hipsters and audiophiles, so here you go.
Islands. The video's a bit silly, but is actually a decent song once it gets into it.
Mates of State.
midori(ミドリ).
The Fiery Furnaces.
Future of the Left.
The American Analog Set.
Silver Jews.
Marnie Stern.
Hail Social.
Roletta Secohan. Okay no lyrics and I don't have an excuse this time, but come on, this is about as hipster as it gets.
Detholz!
Love is Chemicals.(I was tempted to not even put this since it's the only song by them on youtube, but their self titled album was pure gold, unlike this tripe).
Lone Wolf and Cub.
And that's it for me. I'm out of hipster/indie bands to show you guys. Hope you enjoyed or at least looked at some of them.
Does this count?

I'll let it. -_- Midori also got signed to Sony, SaruDa. I'm gonna let it slide of course, they only got signed in 2009. Don't know if you've heard their "!st" and "2nd" stuff but they reformed themselves a little with their first Sony album. It's still very enjoyable and easily can easily be identified as them but it's nothing like Doping and Natsu Romance Mode which I feel are defining songs of theirs. I can actually see them doing well with this sound they used on Shinsekai. It seems very marketable while not rendering them artistically.
not sure if this counts but no one has posted it yet so >_>.......
