   New here.

   Been lurking around a little bit and I'm just curious to know what the exact image is of an Otaku? My personal image of an Otaku is a fat middle ages man/woman who collects figurines, buys anime, talks about anime and spends hour upon hour playing anime games and watching anime.

   I don't do this myself mind you but I'm not what you'd call a "Hardcore Otaku" I'd never buy figurines, I download my anime (Pirate, yarrrrrr....) there aren't many anime video games (Besides Dragonball Z) which I play, I'm not fat nor middle aged and have a pretty active social life.

   What I fear most is though what the world thinks of Otaku.

   You mention the word Otaku to anyone else and if they have a bit of knowledge about it they immediatley think you're a hentai loving, doujinshi reading lolicon pedophile who sits around 4chan all day waiting for the next Boxxy to come along.

   The thing that pisses me off the most is this.

   "Otaku (おたく/オタク?) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests"(, particularly anime, manga, and video games.[1][2]) Because it's been used to describe people who have an addiction to manga and anime it's been generalized (not a word I know) as just that. Otaku can mean you have an obsessive hobbey towards I dunno....Pringles cans?

   What I'm trying to say is why has the image of an Otaku been degraded into such a disgusting image that it is today? The stereotypes that come with it aren't even remotely true in most cases (Such as mine, but like I said i'm no 'Hardcore Otaku') and I'm sure that most of you aren't one of those very small stereotypes of Otaku.

   But its mostly preconceived that way because its based off some truth.
   Like how black people love chicken and kool-aid (stereo type) but you see it in everyday life. all the chicken commercial mostly have black actors, all the kool aid commercial same thing - black movies, fried chicken and kool aid at the dinner table. etc. etc

   what you said, to me thats how i see about maybe 60% of otaku but not middle age - but all ages and all weights. just america plays out the dominate fat otaku :p

   Stereotyping makes it easier to hate things you know nothing about. In general though, the word otaku has degenerated due to the extremists who end up commiting crimes and then the word otaku gets brought up as the reason for why all this happened. However, otaku's origins do stem from people with an obsession for something. I have a friend who is a console otaku, he has pretty much every classic console made, and will spend large amounts of money to collect games or consoles he doens't have. I remember a while back comparing being an otaku and Asperger Syndrome due to the similarities they share. Comparing train otaku and train spotters for example.

   In general though, otaku is a word supposed to be reserved for people who are truly into something. Western culture has tried to weaken its meaning, but all it has really done is further tarnish it.

   cosplays Naruto characters, watches Naruto and mimics what
   they see on Naruto. I'm so sick of these fagbats.

   I don't know what the image of an Otaku is elsewhere in the nation.

   Now if your like me, you watch anime that hasn't been licensed,
   and if you buy DVD's you'll get it at some kind of discount price,
   you fap to loli, you collect loli figures, you give yourself
   aliases from famous loli characters and last but not least, you
   are a complete jerk to Narutards.

   I do call some of these Narutards friends and see them on the
   weekends when i visit the arcade but because of taste in Anime, i
   usually have no fucking idea what they are talking about when they
   start talking about Anime....and vice versa. I actually have
   to school these punks about something else besides Naruto.

   Hmm. I see "Otaku" as those narutards as well; that claims that Naruto is the BEST EVER anime that was created/shown/streamed/crap.
   In terms of saying that I like Anime, it fits in the category of "People who doesn't give attention to except if you're rather interested in this genre". Yes, it's rather absurd but that'll do. :3

   I don't fit the "image" of an otaku for I'm already a busy person at an early stage.
   Although I love watching animes such as the said unlicensed series, it's due to my seriousness for myself that I can't really be an ideal otaku.
   I don't watch any mainstream shows such as Naruto and Bleach because it'll only ruin my views on anime if I did.

   Also, Shounen. Yes, "SOME" shows that I've watched did fall to the category of shounen like TTGL, and I find that to be a masterpiece.
   What I'm talking about is, either the show is good or crap, then I'll watch it in due terms that it'll be worth watching.

   For me an otaku is somewhat better than a Narutard, in that one can distinguish between good anime and bad anime. I basically call anyone obsessed with some facet of Japanese nerd culture an otaku, provided that they are knowledgeable enough. Otherwise, weeaboo (used to use Wapanese, but that only applies to Whites).

    I also forgot to mention but now a days it seems the image of an 'Otaku'
    is someone who fucking blogs about figures and Anime reviews like
    we give a shit.

    These 'Otaku' are what i like to call 'closet anime fans' who
    only share their interest in Anime with other 'Otaku' on the internet.

    They sometimes fabricate to add on to their shitty blogs.

    So, 'Otaku' in my point of view are Narutards and Closet Anime
    fans for now.
