Hi guys I wonder why is Touhou so popular. I played the games a bit but find them quite boring, the Strike Witches doujin game was much more fun http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2008/09/21/shooting-witches-strike-witches-game-download/ . The gameplay and graphic are boring and the characters are nothing special too.
Is it just such moe thing like with K-ON and Lucky Star ? Can someone explain ? ... Am I missing something or is it really just some stupid moe ?

it's more related to the personalities fan doujins/4koma/ and other mediums have given them. honestly it's quite a mistery to me why i became a fan of Scarlet Devil Mansion but it was most probably due to the doujns i read, there are lots of really fun ones. simply put it's not the games themselves but rather the univers and personalities fans have given them.

Touhou games are okay but they are too easy imho.
They do have really good music thoughI prefer DoDonPachi and other Cave shmups

yes, of course Cave game are more difficult that Touhou
but it does not make touhou to be labelled as "too easy" game...
because i know majority of people here can't even clear lunatic without continueanother note is that...
Cave danmaku lack of variation...most of the bullet pattern design to instantly make you give up and bomb it all the way...it's just a swarm of bullet with little to no pattern...it put too much strain on your eyesat least touhou make good attempt to make the danmaku more fun and challenging...

I love the Touhou series because the character's designs look remarkably original(rather than your generic high school girl). I'll admit that that was enough for to get me hooked up to the Touhou series. And the games...well they hard, but entertaining. And seeing as how viral Touhou has become in Japan, I always wonder why ZUN hasn't decided on an anime yet..

zun likes touhou how it currently is, if it suddenly became a liscenced anime the anime would become cannon and if for some reason the characters aren't portrayed how the fans like them too be there would be an uncontrolable amount of rage. be keeping it as a fan-kept and expanded world every one is happy.

It would be dissapointing if Reimu Hakurai or Remilia Scarlet are portrayed as has their polar opposites..

Yes, all the creativity and energy the fans put into the series made Touhou popular in the first place. Its completely unreasonable to convert it into a franchise, especially when their would be an Uproar among Gensokyans. :P

The fans are part of what makes touhou great. A lot of the story and personality is fan created. Like certain popular character quirks. Of course it wouldn't be possible without ZUN's remarkable character designs.

I played 6-10 (because they don't need installation) at normal. The games look all the same for me and I don't like the character drawings (when they talk i.e.) they look so "cheap". And the extreme amount of bullets is ridiculous, it makes the game more boring cause you only evade the bullets the whole time, there's no real action in it then.
So you guys say you like the characters. So I guess it's moe or not ?
There is one big thing that really pissed me off - no Engrish. I mean they know it's very popular overseas too but they don't bother to make English versions of the games and of coarse the web site has no Engrish version too, as always :( For me it's like to say: "we don't give a damn shit about non JP fans". I know there are ENG patches but it's not the same as an official ENG version. I don't see a reason why it cannot be English especially when it's a doujin game - even if ZUN couldn't speak English there are lots of fans who would translate it for him.
Thanks for the answer guys. I think I won't get into it I'm somehow not into the "moe" stuff. Maybe at least I'll play some of the games when I'm bored.

not really a fan of touhou... but i'd be fun to see them in other clothes.... always see pic of them wearing the same thing... gets cliche after awhile.... not saying that other things are much better....
