I didn't like the games before I played them. In fact I played them and still didn't like it at first. I stopped playing and picked it up again a few months later, and that's when I started enjoying the game. Characters are what draw me to touhou.

I knew some of the characters because of SanCom and some image galleries with amazing drawings, I decided to give the game a shot and I did it in a good mood, if I found the game before meeting the characters I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like it, specially because the original character design is pretty bad, some of the fan drawings are simply amazing, etc.

I fell in love with Touhou 1 before I even knew what Touhou was. "The highly responsive to prayers"...shit, I thought it was a porn game.
I played it now a bit and thought why is it so other. If it would be the same game but with airplanes or spaceships not many people would care about it. I think just that there are the "moe" characters gives them and the game some personality and it becomes more familiar with the fans - and when you consider it's Japan and otakus - see k-on.

When you just put a picture of a moe girl an a product then it's more interesting than the other "general" products, it stands out.
The games look quite good but I think it would be popular even if it would be totally bad, just because of the moe.
You're forgetting most people seem to put the music as the main draw. I'm sure 90% of people who see Marisa Stole the Precious Thing have no idea what it's about, or even if the characters are from something besides the video, but they start looking into IOSYS because they like the song. And of course, IOSYS leads to Touhou.

Reminds me how k-on fans refer to music even though I think there isn't much music in the show.
PS: I checked some characters from curiosity, when I should decide I would stick with Sakuya she's just hot and 2nd would be Meilin :)

Never would have given a shit if not for Bad Apple. There are just specific areas that some people never get into. I never got into Hetalia and probably never will. Fell in love with the Bad Apple PV and then the song and finally Cirno. Never played the games but I'm not in deep, so I wouldn't know. =P
i dunno, lumping touhou into the "moe pile" isnt really justified in my opinion, i guess part of the reason i like it at least is because im actually a fan of space shooter games, and the bullet hell types of that games arent really filled with many i like. to me, its a combination of charm, difficulty, and ridiculousness that gets me to like the series.
plus its kind of unfair to really judge the art and the like since its pretty much all put together by one guy, ZUN, plus its a doujin game anyways. and i think his music is actually quite good, given how long the games are, theres a decent amount of music, 2 bgm for each level, normal and boss music, i dont understand how thats not much music when you can beat the games in less than an hour each if you are really good...
and if you think the games are easy... you must have the hands and luck of god or something... especially if you can destroy the game in insane mode...

The music is quite good. About the moe - it's just that I got the impression that fans are crazy about the characters.
I guess it's the combination that makes it strong: (moe)characters + good games + good music
I guess I'll jump on the Touhou train too it's something I have no reason to hate (unlike k-on:) and there are other people who like, so why not go with them...
