This whole issue really makes me realize how much politicians have to deal with; what is a major issue for us, probably never even occurred to them. I guess you can group us with the people who want a law passed stating chairs can't be blue unless they're within five inches of a window.

We also tend to try and mimic their movements while cutting out whatever positive result Europeans nations gained by doing something, so we get all the problems with none of the benefits.
...Really? I'm very surprised to hear that. Finland is the only European country I've heard of using (or planning to use) internet censorship. Well, Russia too.
ISP-level censorship is common. But the kind of censorship mentioned in the article is the kind that is issued by the government, and backed by the law.
You've also forgotten Denmark. This is a list of sites Danish ISPs "voluntarily" filter, under threat of legislation being passed forcing them to comply if they don't.

gotta love American corporate lobbying power.
Government pressuring/bullying ISPs to monitor/filter internet like how it's done in Australia will never fly here.

Great, I suppose some of my artwork is about to become illegal. And I thought this kind of bullshit wouldn't reach Finland...

Perhaps not filtering, but have you seen that Google and Verizon (amongst others) are working to make it so that they can pay for priority of certain content, so that Youtube would load faster than, say Sankaku Complex?

So what else is new? Just another country to have fallen to the masses of moral principles. After all they need to preserve the abused 2D children.. *sigh*

I would not object to being able to stream unpopular videos from youtube without problems with my shitty ISP.

Perhaps, but the way those dealings are being designed, the idea is that all of youtube's traffic is going to be given higher priority over anything else not willing to pay similar fees. If that sounds good to you, enjoy eternal load times for any page not owned by Google, Apple, Microsoft or a government. Otherwise, this sort of arrangement flies in the face of just about everything that makes the internet good.

Otherwise, this sort of arrangement flies in the face of just about everything that makes the internet good.This is how ISPs such as COX handle their traffic
http://www.cox.com/policy/congestionmanagement/
Below is a break-down of the time-sensitivity of the various types of traffic that travel the Cox network. Any traffic that is not specifically classified will be treated as time-sensitive.
Time Sensitive
* Web (Web surfing, including web-based email and chat embedded in web pages)
* VoIP (Voice over IP, telephone calls made over the Internet)
* Email
* IM (Instant messages, including related voice and webcam traffic)
* Streaming (Web-based audio and video programs)
* Games (Online interactive games)
* Tunneling & Remote Connectivity (VPN-type services for telecommuting)
* Other (Any service not categorized into another area)Non-Time Sensitive
* File Access (Bulk transfers of data such as FTP)
* Network Storage (Bulk transfers of data for storage)
* P2P (Peer to peer protocols)
* Software Updates (Managed updates such as operating system updates)
* Usenet (Newsgroup related)</blockquote]This policy sounds reasonable. There's no need for FCC to meddle with ISP's day-to-day operations.

Sounds reasonable enough as is, I'm just not comfortable with Blizzard being able to pay for WoW to jump to the front of the queue, or anyone else who's online and has the money being able to do that. The internet is still one of the last places where you can manage to get by and thrive without corporate backing, and these deals will effectively kill that. I'm going to be pissed off if the internet becomes dominated by the same sort of swine who dominate other forms of media, solely because people running independent sites can't afford the kickbacks to speed things up.
