US military uses manga to reach out to Japan

  1. The US military is using a Japanese graphic novel format called manga to teach Japanese children about the importance of their half-century security alliance.

The new comic book series features a US boy called Usa, who wears a hooded jacket with bunny ears and befriends a Japanese girl, Anzu Arai.

In the first comic of "Our Alliance - A Lasting Partnership," published online today, the boy tells Anzu that he has come to defend her home because they are "important friends."

This is the first of four stories where the two main characters "explore and learn about the US military in Japan and its role in the US-Japan alliance," according to a statement from the US forces.

The US military chose the manga format because it is "a very common way of communicating in Japan," Major Neal Fisher, deputy director of the US forces' public affairs office in Japan, told AFP.

"Manga is a very light-hearted way to carry information" on where US bases are located, what they are doing and how they are cooperating with Japanese forces, Fisher added.

The comic will be published at noon Wednesday at http://www.usfj.mil/manga

To be fair, Japan did attack the United States first. Also, the United States gave Japan fair warning to surrender before the bombs were dropped. They didn't surrender until after the second bomb was used against them several days after the first. Japan's leader was even quoted saying something along the lines of how it would be beautiful if all of Japan should die like a flower rather than surrender (it's been awhile and I can't remember the quote). Point is, the US wasn't this heartless nation that decided we wanted to nuke Japan, it was a long drawn out conflict and we had already lost plenty of men in Germany. Rather than continuing to fight a nation that would literally defend its homeland to the death, we used a controversial tactic that was capable of ending the war quickly. Even if you feel that such an indiscriminate weapon should never be used, understand that Japan was given fair warning and the US had legitimate reason for pulling such a move (honestly, we didn't even start the war this time!).

He speaks the truth, also to add, the United States dropped fliers on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki warning of an imminent strike capable of large-scale devastation before they dropped the bombs. Was it a good thing the US dropped the bombs-- yes and no they were weapons that did cause millions to die but it saved millions, both American and Japanese as pointed out earlier, as well. More than justified, although a terrible thing that unfortunately needed to be done, in my opinion.
