  2. a great leap for manga artist i supposed?

i do not mind spending some money using paypal/credit card to get the latest chapter of manga where the money directly go to author pocket instead of those greedy manga publisher

this also cut down our expense by forcing ourself to buy those expensive manga just to support the author
(which we do not even know how much share being given to them)

the more direct support those mangaka get from their fans...the more committed they are in continuing the series...i personally can't wait how this will turn out...

hopefully the program get a lot of support from both parties...

  3. This is a decent idea. However I'm wondering how the translators/scanlators they're talking about will fit into the picture. Would the cost of the manga being published be significantly higher than the work published by the distribution companies? Have to wait and see how it plays out I guess.

Another issue is whether or not enough artists can actually participate in it, since it's likely that the companies they're contracted with will likely own the distribution rights to the work.

  4. Yep, I thought certainly this sounds better than the Official English Publisher ideas.
But I wonder does this means that manga artist are going to be free from (jap) publishers? If this is yes, then I'm sure this project will face many opposition.

    @owi
I think, if this goes well for a while, obviously it will take in more manga artist on their side, since I can't see why not -_-.. Well, let's hope thinks going good for them. They did say that currently they got around 70+ manga artist approval. I think I'll support them when they're out (again if it's reasonable).

Got to wait more, it's only been few weeks since this project officially starts.

  5. This idea isn't revolutionary. You forget that there has always been a direct sales market in Japan, just not on the internet.

You do remember comiket and other doujin events, right? Where people self-publish their own manga?

Yes, that's right, if mangaka really wanted to break away from "evil publishers" they could always just start self-publsihing there. But what really happens is the opposite. Mangaka start as doujin artists who then are scouted to get their works published by publishers - Think of CLAMP.

So how can we be sure mangaka actually want to break away from publishers? Doesn't seem like it.

But my main opinion on the site is that it may just become the deviant art of comics. Just chalk full of western artists and maybe a few Japanese doujin artists- I just can't see any big name guys jumping in this, personally.

  6. Is this the same idea that was leaked some time ago? The one where they wanted to let the scanlation groups do the work and officially sell the chapters with the publishers consent since the translators have no right on their translations anyway? Sounds like it.

I hope they fail. Well, there is no doubt they will anyway.

  7. I like this idea. The problem for me is that I tend to want all kinds of shoujo manga and I'm always looking for good stories from different creators. If they don't have a lot of variety, except for the mainstream ones, and if they don't update as fast as scantalation groups do, I probably won't invest in this.

Now as an artist, I think it would be interesting to publish your work there. Copyright is pretty annoying because you worry that someone is going to take your ideas or your art and you'll be walked over. A lot of people are still going to pirate or read it online for free if they can though and that's probably never going to change.
