Animated depictions of child pornography should not be trivialized or mistaken for cartoons, an Ottawa court heard Tuesday during the sentencing of a Gatineau man found with nearly 2,000 graphic images on his computer.

Patrick Dupuis-Gendron, 27, was arrested in March 2009 as part of a nationwide sweep called Project Salvo. More than 70 search warrants were executed and 57 suspects were arrested across Canada in what police then called the country's largest co-ordinated investigation into Internet-facilitated child abuse.

Police seized Dupuis-Gendron's computer and located 1,974 images of child pornography. All but three were drawings featuring children in various sexual positions or children engaged in sexual acts with adults or other children.

"To call them cartoons is to trivialize them," said Mark Holmes, an assistant Crown attorney. Both he and Ontario Provincial Court Justice Lise Maisonneuve viewed a representative sample of the images before the sentencing hearing.

Maisonneuve accepted the joint submission of the Crown and defence lawyers on a sentence.

Both sides agreed the first-time offender had suffered embarrassment and shame as a result of the charges, but had maintained a job and completed training to become a welder.

His father and another man sat in court with Dupuis-Gendron, who underwent a psychiatric assessment at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and did not meet the criteria to be deemed a pedophile.

He will serve a 90-day jail sentence on weekends and spend three years on probation.

Because he lives in Gatineau, the judge said she would request that the jail time and subsequent probation be transferred to Quebec.

Dupuis-Gendron was also ordered not to have contact with children under the age of 14 unless another adult is present and to supply a sample of his DNA. His name will be added to the sex-offender registry for 20 years.

i'd never realized how many people, especially hundreds of thousands of young kids are registered sex offenders, they dont get their name in the paper, they don't get their own story.

rounded up everyday, vanish from the internet due to probation and we believe them to be a myth, until it happens to us.

What I'm more curious about is how they issued these search warrants, like what criteria they were using to deem a person a potential pedophile if some of these guys only had pictures on their computer.

People throw the word freedom around when it suits there interests but when it comes down to material that they do not find "appropriate", the word is twisted and then the line between freedom and condemnation is blur. I don't see how pixels or drawings make you a predator and to be labeled that for 20 years for said drawings is beyond irrational, the guy had completed training and was in a good job, the psychologist even said "did not meet the criteria to be deemed a pedophile", but yet he was labeled a sex offender for 20 years.

We have to start doing something a survey, blog, website, polls, something because whats next ? watching movies with crime makes you a criminal ? watching hentai makes you a rapist ? playing fps makes you a serial killer ? I always ask this with this cases, wheres the living breathing child and not pieces of lines, who benefits from this ? Not the Victim who is hunted, not the public because no one was hurt, no real people were involved and sure as hell no justice because now someone who is no real predator was capture, yet the really freaks still roam the streets laughing at this stupidity but I guess innocent people are easier to prosecute then monsters, there easy to bring and make fools of then doing actually hurting.

Exactly this. I doubt they were monitoring so many peoples internet activity, which if they did is akin to a wiretap and Canada has fuckd up privacy laws.

If you're doing something people look down on (not necesarily illegal), keep it in youself and in your house.

These laws and arrests that make the headlines are just for show. Politicians and police can't catch the real child predators, so to save face the go after the easy prey and say "look, we got sone bad guys off the street."
