  1. iWhatever users may want to look at this:

Quoted from the Electronic Frontier Foundation:
The first of EFF's three successful requests clarifies the legality of cell phone "jailbreaking" — software modifications that liberate iPhones and other handsets to run applications from sources other than those approved by the phone maker. More than a million iPhone owners are said to have "jailbroken" their handsets in order to change wireless providers or use applications obtained from sources other than Apple's own iTunes "App Store," and many more have expressed a desire to do so. But the threat of DMCA liability had previously endangered these customers and alternate applications stores.

In its reasoning in favor of EFF's jailbreaking exemption, the Copyright Office rejected Apple's claim that copyright law prevents people from installing unapproved programs on iPhones: "When one jailbreaks a smartphone in order to make the operating system on that phone interoperable with an independently created application that has not been approved by the maker of the smartphone or the maker of its operating system, the modifications that are made purely for the purpose of such interoperability are fair uses."

I just read this in the news, too. I was quite surprised at it. It's interesting to note that this ruling also allows people to jailbreak Android devices.

That being said, I agree with Schrobby.

  6. I can't see how this was ever a bad thing for smartphones to begin with. You money maker is the hardware itself, now that more can be down with it naturally would sell more.

well heres one reason why...the spring board program in cydia
    allows me to do this~

but i do agree that i hate the itouch...not because of its functions, but because it only last 6 months before it starts having problems...and apple likes charging $160 just to fix the smallest of problems...

  9. I actually considered a Touch once but when Apple decided to cut off third party apps and in the process preventing my OS from accessing it I said fuck it and bought a Sansa player which supports many more formats.

  10. This is actually pretty cool to me. I use an iPhone just because it has all the uses I would need and jail broke it a couple years ago for shits and giggles. But nice to see I can go back to that and see what's new. Specially loved tethering my phone to my laptop while I was out of the house.

  17. Jailbreaking allows you to to do all sorts of random stuff. From customizing the appearance (everything can be skinned, just whether you know or bother to do it) to installing 3rd-party and *coughs*cracked*coughs*apps*

The eva theme that can be found in Cydia literally skinned the whole iOS interface almost completely... though with some obvious flaws, still a good job done.

While I'm at it, for those who know the bisei-tokei app for the iOS, you can run it on the desktop of any Win/Mac with the required programs/libraries which can be found here (yes, I know this is old news).
Also you will need the bisei-tokei app which can be easily searched.

Edit: I should have added an option "I don't own a iWhatever" in the poll.

That's very sad. And you shouldn't have to change the color of the text, it is possible to have text of any color that can be seen with a background of any color, by setting a border of a contrasting color, like you see on subtitles.

The fact that those who made your device didn't even care to think about readability or even basic customizability is really really sad.

I don't guess the providers of the hack to change the wallpaper also had one for changing the text rendering to one which is readable with a wallpaper, right?

Also, is it possible to change the OS?

  19. It's about time the law makers did something right though I'd prefer to have DMCA completely repealed.

If I buy a device it's mine and I should be able to do what ever I wish to it including alter it's firmware.

There have been many failed attempts for the last 8 months, I'm guessing no. I'm not including the Windows XP change though. I mean changing it tosay Mac X OS, doesn't seem to be possible.
