Would you buy a rare game?

  1. My best game of all times was always Final Fantasy 8. So one day, when I found the original Japanese first edition (new and still sealed) of the game I decided to buy it. But now I'm having second thoughts. The game cost me a whopping 400$ (4万円), and although I always wanted to own an original copy of the game I'm not sure if it's a great collectible. I mean, I know it's great, but other people probably won't understand it's value, it's a pretty fragile collectible and it will probably be kept locked in some glass box or something. I should mention that I can still send the game back and get a refund. The problem is I'm kind of contradicting myself: On one hand the prize seems really high (I can buy another PS3 for that price) and people will never understand. On the other hand it holds great value for me, and I probably won't be getting another chance at owning this in the future. So what do you think? Is buying a rare game worth it? Do you have rare games you bought and if so how do you enjoy them?

  2. When I went to a used game shop in Nakano,Tokyo. There were some games that were much more expensive. Xenogears and the PS ver. of lain for example. I think collecting rare games is valuable. They would be a part of history, and someday there may be a videogame museum. There are already computer museums.

  3. If you're buying a rare game for the purposes of playing it, then sure, it's probably worth it. Even though it was re-released, most people paying $100+ for FFT were probably happy with their purchases.

However- $400 for a jewelcase with half decent cover art? That does strike me as somewhat pointless, unless there are other goodies associated with it. For example, I've heard the original SFC version of DQ1+2 had a huge instruction manual loaded with tons of Toriyama artwork.

  5. Bought ZoE 2 used for 30 € not 2 years back. Good purchase, aye captn. And to giko: These games won't last forever CD and DVDs have life expectancy ( call it what you will >.< ) of 15-50 years and then they'll be dust or rather - just plastic.

I've been looking for a laserdisc of the DAICON movies forever.
Once, I was hot on the trail of one, but it got snatched up. T_T
I'd gladly pay as much as two PS3s for one!

I buy rare games all the time. From the used games section.

Just recently I found a copy of Ico and Silent Hill 2. Still tracking down Jet Set Radio Future.

Never found one myself. Had to emulate. Still have vintage copies of the other SNES classics but... I was an industrious little guy and I cut apart all the instruction booklets to use as art and game pieces in my makeshift board games >_>

In another ten years or so, as they start getting rarer and worth more, I'll probably be cursing myself for this...

But on topic, would I buy a rare original like that? I'll stick to the used games bins for the older stuff. Or I guess emulator if it's old enough, as buying used games doesn't do much of anything to help support the industry.

Especially the one with the air-boarding bunny girl (IV, was it?). That would be quite a find.

  12. I would so buy these games...

    1.) Suikoden
    2.) Suikoden II
    3.) Final Fantasy VI
    4.) Shadowrun
    5.) Star Wars (SNES)

These are the very first RPG games that I've finished since I was a kid. Started to use the SNES when I was still 2. Mom teaches me on Super Mario and etc.
I'd be willing to waste money on those games.

  14. Just checked my collection. Nothing really what could be called rare, except maybe for "The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition" for Gamecube. But ebay is full of it, so I doubt it's rarity.
Then again I only buy my games in their original box and with the manual, never the cart/disc only. That makes them rarer, I guess.

And if you're feeling happy after buying a rare game and when holding it in your own hands, no matter how much it did cost, then I see nothing wrong with it. It's your own money. Do whatever the fuck you want with it.

  15. Wheel personally I own at very least 120 games that are super rear collectible games (including FF8 LOL) and that alone probably send me back at the very least $10,000 this is not including the ones my wife and children own. I never bout whit out having money to spare and I mean allot of money let’s say that there was a game $200 I would only buy it if I could double the price so that means for the $200 game I would have $400 left and more just in case my kids needed braces or some car accident dented my car or some shit along those lines. In the end what I’m telling you is that if you need that money then return the game if you think you will be able to spare the $400 then go for it reword your self

Sorry, I kinda missed that category bar T_T
and thanks to all of you who replied. I'm not going to play the rare one I bought. It will be kept in a safe place with no air for display. I have other copies for playing. kingalekz, I think you're absolutely right. I might think the game is expensive as hell, but I'm not broke and I'm working so in a month or so the money I spent will come right back. In 20 years I will be playing Final Fantasy 18 with my kids and showing them the original version of 8 that their lunatic father bought ^_^
