Is anybody living in Japan at the moment? My friends and I are planning a trip to Japan for mid-next year; and I would like some info on:
1. Places to visit/things to do that they don't tell you in guide books.
2. Cheap but not too dodgy accommodation.

This looks like a question for Artefact. He seems to know about all the hot spots in japan. If he doesn't reply here(he might), you can try emailing him.
Getting lost in the subway network is always fun. That's happened to me at least twice in each of the times I've been to Japan. Usually found something interesting that way.
Well what type of accommodation are you looking for? I don't know about many hotels but apparently hotel Asakusa Toukaisu, which I stayed at a while ago, is rather cheap and located conveniently too. :3

I've only ever been to Hiroshima, but if you're in the area, you must:
1. stop by Miyajima and feed the deer some paper or something. It's a very pleasant island.
2. Try some Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki
3. Okay I admit there's really nothing else to do in Hiroshima.

i'm interested too. i was only in tokyo once and i stayed at the Hilton
Cheap but not too dodgy accommodation usually consists of "business hotels" and "guest houses" - business hotels are just no frills hotels, guest houses generally cater to people staying on a monthly basis, but are typically inhabited by the sort of dodgy foreigners who can't or won't get a proper apartment. There are hostels, but I would consider these dodgy, and they can be heavily booked.
Wikitravel has a huge article on Japan which seems useful.
