An Interview with Artefact

  1. Does anyone have examples of 3d cel shaded anime done particularly well? The times I've noticed it (perhaps the reason why I noticed it) was because the fluidity of animation seemed off. I can think of two cases in the current season:

Kiss x Sis: the dancing in the ED, the girls look great as stills, but in motion seem more like marionettes. Chibi Gundam 3 Kingdoms has the same effect, but since they're robots it looks fine.
Idol Lilpri: The standard dance scene. Opposite problem- the motion was too smooth making it look creepy and unnatural.

Edit: Maybe once it becomes more common it won't seem weird. Indeed it's not like traditional anime style drawing is particualrly natural looking, I'm just accustomed to it, so what I'm noticing is not so much a problem as simple contrast.

  2. Actually I like the site as it now. Too many flashy things slow down the site. There's a couple other anime news sites/blogs that I used to visit, but abandoned completely as they revamped and 'up-graded' soo much that borders would take forever to load or pictures wouldn't show it. I'd have to refresh the page 5-6 times to show all the content. The funniest thing was that the ads always showed up before the site content because they weren't as fancy.

  3. If you look at the very beginning of Sankaku, you'll see it started as a blog. The articles were about Artefact's likes and experiences with anime and manga. But now it trully is a news site, for better or for worse.

I can relate with Artefact not having enough time to watch anime. Having since started working, I have fallen behind on this season's anime.

    DC.com? ahahahah

I used to go on there once a day but never been there in ages now. The user base has gone down the drain in terms of quality and its one of the few sites where the user experience and the layout designs get worse and worse despite it being called 'better'. The layout is in an absolute mess the last time I visited (weeks ago) and the pages take forever to load as DC seemed intent on cramping as many FULL HD pictures into 1 page while getting away with as little text as possible to accompany them

yeah same here. working leaves little free time for anime/games...
but because of work i can buy all the anime, games and junk that i want.
someday i'll get to watch them...

  6. I was going to avoid mentioning it, but yea. That's the site I mean.

    IT'S SO FUCKING ANNOYING.

I never used to go on it much, but after that stupid "upgrade" I never go there anymore.

Also, the fucking dolfie otaku and their daughters.

  7. hey, knock the site, don't knock the dollfies! I'm not really into dollfies myself but I can see why people get them. They are really really good works of art if I must say so

But yeah, similarly, I can see why people hate dollfies. Uncanny valley as well as the 'creepy' otaku social aspect and also the fact that some of the owners really treat their 'daughters' really really weirdly

  8. I've wanted to get a SD doll before, but couldn't afford that and cosplaying too, so gave up.

I mean how they fucking conglomerate and amass and shit. It's like if Sankaku suddenly got flooded by train otaku, I'd probably stop visiting the forums.

Let's not derail this thread anymore.

    /discussion over

  11. Lol I was actually thinking the other day what Artefact is really like. While the interview doesn't go into personal details it does offer some insight on how Artefact is handling the site and what keeps it running. Im also ex MMO player myself :D. And yeah I also hope that you won't "upgrade" this site with things that make the loading times horrible. It's already a very nice blog / news site.

  12. I love Artefact's posts, when someone introduced me this website I was a little skeptical of a "blog" about anime, after a while reading his comments, seeing the sarcasm and intelligence of his posts I started enjoying this place a lot, I could probably get news about anime and manga from elsewhere, I just don't think it'd be as fun as.

Keep up the great work Arty-pie, your website is awesome.

  14. Hey Artefact, sorry if I'm derailing the thread or anything of the sorts and sorry if I'm asking for stuff you don't want to/have to answer, but I was wondering...

Do you make money out of SanCom or do you barely earn enough with ads to keep up with the server expenses? I am going to go ahead and guess you make some money (since you're willing to pay for a contributor), is it good money or do you just really like what you do?

That is sheer prejudice. "Anime" style 3D CG already looks almost on par with traditional animation, it's simply a question of the method used to obtain a visual result.

And shifting to having artists work in creating and animating 3D models would hardly be an impoverishment - more like an upgrade.

Kind of like the animated parts of Valkyria Chronicles? (I'm talking PS3 here)

I remember the time when anime started switching from pure analog colouring to digital like it is now. The colors seemed off, and when they added 3D models, they looked out of place, with the framerate they had and the frames per second of the characters.

Personally, I wouldn't like to see hand drawn anime go, but I can't help but think that making a series the way VC was made can be a good idea.

I would like to know how much each of those sequences in the game cost to animate.

  17. Page load time and rendering speed is part of "good design," so no matter how ergonomic the site, if it is sketchy in loading it will provide a poor user experience. Hopefully an emphasis on both performance and ergonomic design shows in this site.

I don't really consider this site to have evolved significantly in terms of becoming a "news site" - rather the literary style and mode of reporting has solidified and moved away from the relatively informal style common to such sites, which I initially emulated to a degree.

That is to say it was a news site to begin, just the idiom was in flux in order to find the best complement to the tastes of the largest possible audience.

And there is scarcely a mention of my favourites on the site, so I think it is wrong to characterise the content as having been particularly personal.

As to 3D graphics, Rorona, Miku HD and Naruto on the PS3 and Dream Club on the Xbox are excellent examples of anime styled 3D graphics. If done well these techniques can surely supplant 2D animation, and even more excitingly they offer a new doujin world - imagine the equivalent of MikuMiku Dance with cutting edge visuals and the ability to construct video or game based 3D "anime" productions.

A single creator needs millions of dollars in resources to create an anime using traditional methods, but an individual could create something of comparable quality with a sufficiently well developed set of tools.

  18. Glad to be a member, and hope you keep up the good work Artefact. No matter how controversial (which most articles seem to be), Sancon has had an immense impact on my life personally (changing and introducing me to other "niche" culture).

Am curious if you'll do another interview on more personal and private matters such as Age, Sex, Location, History.

Question 3 for me. I agree with the "moe boom" but disagree with the 3DCG. Never liked it, and why fix something that's not broken?

I actually gave an a legitimate reason.Arte stated that it's cheaper to produce.Faster as well I would say.I'd understand the shift to what IG productions,Gainax and Geneon started doing back in 2000;using full 3d environments. It becoming standard wouldn't surprise me at all.I feel more productions should be in the likes of Last Exile now actually. You shouldn't spare impressive cinematics for theatrical releases alone.I rather liked the full 3d look on the appleseed films but It would surely become drab if standardized. But It could inspire a lot more game-to-anime transitions or even promote more multimedia franchise similar to that of the ".hack" franchise.I personally think that Atlus should try this with new Megaten titles.
