New York City police have defused a car bomb parked in Times Square, one of the city's busiest tourist attractions, officials say.
They say propane tanks, fireworks and a timing device were removed from a parked SUV.
Part of the area has been cleared of pedestrians and blocked off.
Both President Barack Obama and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg praised the quick response by the New York Police Department.
"We are very lucky," Mr Bloomberg told reporters. "We avoided what could have been a very deadly event."
The security alert was triggered when a street vendor saw smoke coming from a black Nissan Pathfinder parked on 45th Street and Seventh Avenue at about 1830 (2230 GMT) on Saturday.

Police shut down several blocks of New York's busiest tourist attractions, as well as subway lines, while a robotic arm broke windows of the vehicle.
"There were explosive elements, including powder, gasoline, propane and some kind of electrical wires attached to a clock," police spokesman Paul Browne told reporters early on Sunday.
"No motive has been identified," he added.
Mr Browne also said officers were investigating a report that someone had been seen running and they are reviewing security videotapes.
The car's plates do not match the registration, he said.
FBI agents have joined NYPD investigators at the scene.
The White House said President Obama was being kept up to date on the investigation.
The most recent terror alert in New York City involved a plot to set off suicide bombs in the subway system.
Earlier this year an Afghan immigrant, Najibullah Zazi, and an associate, Zarein Ahmedzay, both pleaded guilty in connection with the attempt.Real or conspiracy? Actions of a domestic terrorist getting bolder? Next time might not be so lucky if thats the case.

I have, like, absolutely no reason to ever be at Times Square. Except for maybe Sbarro, but I can think of six other Sbarros that are closer to where I live. Incidentally, I remember a story about a Sbarro in Jerusalem getting hit by a suicide bomber. I wonder if they were trying to do the same with the one in Times Square.

Isn't Sbarro a pizza place, if I'm not mistaken?
Why would they bomb a pizza place? Personally I just think they wanted as many deaths as they could without a specific target, so they just put it in Times Square.Posted 5 years ago # -

Taliban of pakistan has taken responsibility. it's not for the comedy central offices probably just trying to get casualties from the marathon. It's similar in style to that used by the IRA which IMO was >>>>>>>>>> then the Towlieban.

awww man they found my bomb...shit guess ill have to try again. i think this time ill try a nail bomb on a subway car, or maybe just chuck one into the crowded streets. what do you guys think? should i use a nail bomb of another propane tank gas bomb?

Seems you gentlepersons might have the decency to note a wee little fact that is quite obvious to the international news media. The location the vehicle was parked is also adjacent to the Viacom building, Viacom airs Comedy Central. Comedy Central produces "South Park". "South Park" spoofed on Mohammad. Islam has no sense of humor or tolerance for such activities. We are seeing the results. It might be time for the other members of this religion grew up and joined the adult 21st century world.
