   Okinawans rally at an athletics ground - 25 April 2010
   Mr Hatoyama's handling of the issue could be critical ahead of polls in July

   Nearly 100,000 people have attended a rally in Japan's southern island of Okinawa demanding that a US military base be moved off the island.

   Under a 2006 agreement with the US, the US Marines' Futenma base was to be moved from the centre to the coast.

   But demonstrators want Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama to stick to an election pledge to remove it completely.

   The row over the base has undermined relations between his centre-left Government and the US.

   The BBC's Roland Buerk in Tokyo says Mr Hatoyama staked his job on resolving the issue by the end of May.

   He is now under pressure because of his apparent dithering over the base, our correspondent adds.

   His handling of the issue could be critical ahead of upper house polls in July.

   Japanese have long been resentful of the massive US base on the island, which is home to more than half the 47,000 American troops based in Japan.

   Japan lost a war about 60 years ago. According to war you dont gotta give shit back unless you want or the rising threat of rebellion causes you to leave. 1 military base, usa not giving that up.

   And you have to know its more going on then whats been told, Japanese government dont want that military base to go, all threats on japan from NKorea have mostly been empty based on that U.S is near by. Hell Nkorea has said it once. That may not be the real issue but that base is not moving Too strategic.

   Humm did a little research, seems our troops within Skorea has have a treaty thats limits how many troops we can have in Skorea maybe they should reduce the one in japan from 33,000 to 10,000 since nothing really major will happen in japan, tho some top brass In the usa is pretty much saying that base in japan is useless. but we still have 3 other coop-op bases.

   Neither should ethnic Japanese. That island belongs to Ryukyuans.

   as an American let me tell you about how i believe our foreign policy is fucked. we spend more then any other country in the world on military greater then China and Russia combined.

   We use this to babysit countries who then whine that we are there.

   If you don't want us there and we aren't actively stopping a genocide i think we should leave, let you deal with yourself, and spend the money we save to pay down our debt.

   Darfuris blame America for the muslims killing them. Why? They think it's OUR JOB to babysit them. Why do we even have a UN?

   Japan is strong enough to protect itself. If they don't want us there, why should we annoy them and waste our money staying? That goes for EVERY OTHER COUNTRY we have bases in.

   Oh and to half of Asia we saved during WW2, YOU'RE WELCOME! Oh and sorry we couldn't save you form Mao.
