Why I won't buy an iPad (and think you shouldn't, either)

  1. I know that a whole week is like enough time for a civilization to rise and fall and all, but this old article really got me thinking.

  2. It's just an oversized and overpriced ipod touch.

There's no reason the article wouldn't apply to ipod touches as well.

  4. I wouldn't even Subconsciously think of buying That piece of shit! XD

  5. I had seen a demonstration of what it can do, and it was kinda cool, until I found out that you can't adapt portable memories in it.

  6. I've read this before and I followed one of the articles.

    http://diveintomark.org/archives/2010/01/29/tinkerers-sunset

It really touches me because I can relate to many of the experiences (although I wasn't alive in the 80's, I had my own generation of electronics to take apart).

I think the ipad represents something lost and something gained.

It should be noted that layers of abstraction are necessary for the advancement of technology though. It's kinda like programming languages. First there was machine language, then assembly, then C, then Java, then Python. With each new generation of languages, we abstracted further. Many programmers who started in newer generations, although having knowledge of lower levels, will never be as knowledgeable and experienced as people who lived in the era. High level programming languages, though, let us develop much more complex and advanced programs.

I'm definitely not going to buy an ipad; I hate apple.

I do, however, think, it's another necessary step where our lives are further integrated with machines.

I don't think the ipad will make any money for Apple, but future generations of ipad-like devices will one day play an integral part of human society.

  7. Note that while higher level programming languages enable us to do more interesting and complex things than we could have dreamed of as little as 20 years ago, it still cuts down on program efficiency. However, I felt the article dealt more with proprietary everything, and less with abstraction of technology.

Actually, I would say that it's almost impossible for a human to write efficient code for a modern day processor at the rawest level, when you consider things like compilers, out-of-order multiple issue processors, and memory management.

I suppose that might be true. All I know is what I've read, truth be told.

Wait, are you dissing one of Apple's creations? You know perfectly well that whatever Apple makes is absolutely-great-even-though-I-don't-even-know-what-the-hell-it-is!

ah I see. they are marketing geniuses/lucky bastards though, and that's all that counts in a consumeristic culture.

also they're already planning on releasing a smaller version next year..

  14. I already have a DS Lite, Gaming PC, PS3, 360, Macbook Pro and Nokia N900 (phone/tablet) so I fail to see what use I would even have for an iPad. I mean it doesn't even support flash while even my phone does that.

Isn't that called iPhone or iPod Touch? :P

  15. Lets see it's over priced ,not expandable, cannot multitask ,does not have an SD slot, no USB port, and is locked down with DRM.

"So what does Marvel do to "enhance" its comics? They take away the right to give, sell or loan your comics. What an improvement. Way to take the joyous, marvellous sharing and bonding experience of comic reading and turn it into a passive, lonely undertaking that isolates, rather than unites."

lol Its about the same as using computer, but here, its the opposite isn't it? Lots of people buy mangas even though they normally read online don't they? And also mangaka(or whoever controls the mangas) make money out of mangas and figurines cosplay etc. Cory Doctorow (Marvel comics might be learning/learnt from them at the very moment!) really should learn from them how they could make money out of comics other than just the comics itself.

Probably a better summary of the article than "apple is overrated"

  18. Oh my god... These tl;dr are so interesting~

This is inspiring me to try to learn how to program ^~^

i spent an hour just reading them... (2 times if nessesary~)

I didn't know the world was heading in the direction where modifying was considered evil...

    keep uploading articles...

I love when the guy in the video says "i'll buy almost anything if it's shiny and made by apple". It's so true in what many people think and do.

I myself don't see the point in the ipad, it's just more useless shit.

  20. I only need to say 'HP Slate'

Yeah it's not like the iPad will have no competition.

By the end of the year you will likely be seeing quite the turf war over hand held book thingies.

    And that's just one option.
