Need help choosing a college plz

  1. sup

If anyone noticed I've been away a lot recently, it's because I'm busy with school stuff right now. I've narrowed down my choices to either the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD, Savannah, Georgia), or the School of Visual Arts (SVA, New York, New York) for a BFA in animation. So I may as well ask for suggestions here, because I trust you people for whatever reason!

    tl;dr ahead:

    ---

    SCAD
    Pros:

Facilities look like they were built yesterday
Full sound studio (I want to minor in sound design)
    Good dorms
    Meal plan seems great
    Savannah, Georgia is beautiful
    Apparently has good reputation
    $40,820 total cost
$1000/year scholarship if I can keep my grades up
    Cons:
    No notable alumni
    Campus spread all over city
    No family/friends
Very hard to get in/out of area

    SVA
    Pros:

    Great dorms
    Don't need a meal plan (it's NYC)
Amazing reputation (Oscar winners and directors and half the people on Adult Swim)
    Close to family/friends
    Can be $38,200
    Cons:
    Facilities are old and cramped
    No scholarship
    Campus spread all over city
Decent sound studio, but can't have a minor
    Can be $43,200
    ---

I talked to Fred Seibert (Frederator), and he said that SVA would be a great fit for me, and that people who graduate from there often become very successful. However, he also said that if I have a scholarship to SCAD, I may as well just go, because I'm going to end up in the same place, anyway.

If you have any questions, just ask. Thanks.

  2. What do you mean by "no scholarship" on the second one? So you have a scholarship in the first college?

  3. Well, I for one thin you should take SCAD, it seems like there are more thing that can help you to a better education there, and also living a bit a way from home is a good thing, meeting new people, get a different perspective of life :)

And besides I'm sure it wont be long before you meet new friends at the school :D

  6. Well if you have a scholarship in the first one I think SCAD but if not SVA for the reputation, and I personally love New York.

    Yes, $5000 a year, I believe.

Oh, I live in Colorado. I'm away from home either way, it would just be easier to visit family on break or something.

I'm not a city person, hence my hesitation toward SVA. I guess I could get used to it, as the good seems to outweigh the bad.

  9. Though it seems the first choice is the one to take, what are the tuitions for both schools? Even if you're getting a $5000/year scholarship, how much would you have to pay to cover the rest?

SVA is $38,200 - $43,200, depending on the type of dorm. SCAD is around $40,820.

I got SCAD's scholarship mixed up with another school. SCAD would be $1000/year, if I keep a GPA of 3.0 or above.

  11. I'd say SCAD because the tuition price seems about the same, and the pros for SCAD outweigh the pros for SVA.

It looks that way, but I can't really convey SVA's strong points with just bullet points. They really have an incredible reputation; the school keeps e-mailing me about students that have won Oscars, and countless alumni have gone on to get their own shows or direct feature films. I've heard nothing about SCAD. In the short-term, SCAD seems like the better choice, but SVA seems better long-term.

  17. SVA
its about the same, but Savanna is in Hurricain territory - which can muck up classes among other things.

the $1,000 scholarship doesn't even phase the rest of the cons in either case. Since everyone qualifiys for the a $1,000 pell grant you can get it anywhere.

SVA pros you have friends and family to assist and support you in what ways they can.
Also the alumni are an added plus because once you get your degree, any prospective employer will recognize your alumnis and hope that you're going to be an asset in their future.

  18. I would say choose the college based on costs. Unless you have all of that covered already. Worrying about tuition is one of the greatest causes of stress for me.

Going to college in the city is really fun, but I guess you miss out on the standard college life of living on a set campus. Still, I would recommend city life, but that's a personal preference. A lot of people that go to my college, go there just because of it's location. The city is definitely a great influence on why I'm here.

Also, living in NYC is more expensive than living in other places.
