It would probably more accurate to say that most people think the otaku culture surrounding anime is a disgusting perversion. People typically don't have a problem with the occasional Ghibli movie, "art house" films like Kanashimi no Belladonna, and "classics" like Astro Boy which find popularity among people who don't particularly have an interest in anime.
