Becoming a Mangaka

  1. I plan to move to Japan in 2 years to become a mangaku (I am aware this is an unstable job)

However I do have some questions.

    1. Where can I buy Shonen Jump (in Japanese) and get it shipped to my country. Is there a website for this? I've tried amazon.jp

    2. What is the easiest way for me to submit my name (rough copy) or manuscript to Jump? I heard there was a contest in Shonen Jump that lets you submit your manga for a 1 shot, but can I still submit my manga if I don't enter this contest?

    3. Does anybody know what the most popular manga magazines are in Japan? All I know is shonen jump and I found a list on wikipedia but I don't know which ones are popular. I'll be either doing a dark / more serioues manga or a battle manga, and all I know is that Shonen jump is good for battle manga. Anybody know a magazine for dark manga?

Everyone please help me revolutionize the declining manga industry :)

making a post like this would make you the troll.

please don't make vague generalizations just because in this day in age dreams are unreachable for many.

I'm trying to pursue my dream (and I am aware of the risks and the chances of success) and would appreciate if you didn't try to ruin that

  5. I love it. I suppose you'll be able to write your manga so they'll sell in English? Or maybe you're using some ancient romanization I don't know about that renders mangaka as 'mangaku'?

  6. You mean mangaka right?

Why don't you post some of your art in the artist thread?

Here's a place you can buy weekly/monthly shonen jump.

Read the instructions for applying in the magazine. fyi, if you were serious about becoming a mangaka, you're better off entering a competition closer to home. The rising stars of manga by tokyopop is one such competition, but it's on hiatus for the time being. Yenpress and Del Rey also accepts submissions from amateurs.

Here's a list of Japanese Manga magazines. There are a lot out there. Do some research.

    Learn Japanese.

Just a suggestion..why are you so dead set on going to Japan? Surely if you could output manga quality comics right here in America(I'm assuming you're from America, my apologies if I'm wrong), you'd revolutionize one industry.

A few extra reasons you should stay where you are and try to draw comics:
    1. You won't have to deal with the racism that runs rampant in Japan.
    2. Mangaka are pretty damn poor in Japan. They have to go through agencies, and probably another middle-man as well, cutting out the majority of their profits.
    3. It wouldn't be quite as institutionalized if you were living somewhere other than Japan. See also: 2
    4. You can keep your language, and learn Japanese at your leisure.
I'm sure I could list many, many other reasons not to go to Japan, but if you're absolutely determined, just find out which publishers produce some of your favorite manga. That sort of thing is always listed on Wikipedia, and is quite easy to look up.

    1. I'm asian
    2. I'd rather starve than make a living as something else

I'm determined to move to japan cuz it's the only way I have any chance of becoming the best. If I draw here it might not even have the fanbase to get translated and published in Japan

To say it bluntly: If you're not any good here, you won't be any good there.

can't really compare 2 completely different fanbases

still, even if I'm #1 in america, it will still be impossible to reach #1 in Japan just cuz it's from an american writer

just a solution to som1 who said rampant racism would be an obstacle in Japan

  16. Post something you drew. You can use a camera to take a picture of your drawing if you don't have a scanner. If you really wanna become a mangaka, you'll need to show your work eventually. Or do you have a plot your working on? Then post your ideas.
