The Legend of "Swordquest"

  1. Swordquest is an Atari series of role-playing games that was released for the Atari 2600. The first installment of the game was released on October 1982.

What made Swordquest an exceptional video game was the idea of setting the players on a quest that took them beyond the confines of the game cartridge and their analog idiot boxes and into an adventure of EPIC proportions that would (have) eventually lead the most worthy to what could have been the "holy grail" of video games.

Who better to tell the legend than the nerd himself: The Angry Video Game Nerd.

Putting the "quest" out of the game and into the players' hands, literally.

With the "Talisman of Penultimate Truth" and the "Chalice of Light" having been awarded to the worthy victors, perhaps the greatest mystery of all is the whereabouts of the "Crown of Life", "Philosopher's Stone" and the magnificent "Sword of Ultimate Sorcery".

I found this video highly interesting as it combined two of my favourite topics: video games and history, and perhaps, role-playing, and glad to share this with not just my fellow SanCom comrades, but to all travelers on the Internet plane.

  2. So it's like an ARG before ARGs were even coined. That's an amazing story. Pity Atari crashed, would've been interesting to know how it might've ended.

The Video game nerd is ridiculous, but I often find his expository and anecdotes to be quite informative. Guy knows his stuff(or has a really good source for looking it up). I wonder if Swordquest would be any fun without a manual...I might download them.

  4. Well, you can get PDF documents for such things online, for example:

Not sure that's all the documentation you'd need, but it's a start.

  7. Ah, Swordquest... It'd be fucking awesome if some company were to create a new quest of equal or greater epic proportions.

Also, AVGN's earler videos are better than his more current ones.

  8. If you read one of his more recent comments, he said that he's burning out by doing 2 episodes a month- something that he doesn't plan to continue. I can't say that I've noticed a decline in quality, but if you have issue with the current content, it may get better in the near future.

  10. Some dated but no less interesting articles:-

A take on the puzzles, rules and answers to the Swordquest: Earthworld playoff revealed by the writer of the Swordquest challenges himself.
The Earthworld playoff, in which the final seven players competed for the Talisman of Penultimate Truth, was won by Steven Bell.

Also, an interview with Michael Rideout, winner of the Swordquest: Fireworld contest and bearer of the winner's prize, the Chalice of Light.
The interview mentions his experience participating in the contest, of reactions toward the cancellation of the succeeding contests and his attestation to the existence of the other prizes: The Crown of Life, the Philosopher's Stone and the Sword of Ultimate Sorcery.
