  4. It's surprising to know how much Latin America has moved up in the world, not to mention Carlos Slim's method of gaining monetary dominance, which is through near-complete control of Mexico's telecommunications industry.

And the fact that the world's current richest person is from what we still consider to be a "developing" nation where a sizable percentage of its population live in poverty in comparison to your standard developed nations.

  5. its not surprisng at all, the best way to make money is in "developing countries"

and with lax laws and regulation, once you find your niche in capitalism. money rolls in.
A wise man would invest in a media conglomerate in mexico.

on another note, Didn't forbes recently have to decide if they should kick a billion dollar crime lord off the list :P

  6. That's a misleading generalization. The best way to make money is in a burgeoning industry. It's how all the tycoons of the past century made their empires, like John D. Rockefeller who is considered the richest man ever if you take inflation into account. Think about those folks, along with the new billionaires in America, like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and the folks at Google. On the other hand, Latvia -- along with much of the former Warsaw Pact nations -- are developing countries, but it would be unwise to invest in most anything there.

And business regulation isn't all too different in Mexico as it was here in the US during the Roaring Twenties and as it is in the post-Reagen era.

  7. There is rarely any money to be made in a society that has stagnated.

The big money is in countries wanting to catch up to us, and that have billions not millions of customers.

India could well be a commercial paradise if played right.
Not sure about China though. Commies are a tricky target.

I remember reading about his rise last year. If Gates isn't making money, someone has to, and he's about only one that could be top contender

  15. If I recall correctly, isn't this old news?

Though, I am surprised to see two Indians in the top five list.

  16. Who cares lol?

Once you have ~1 billion then you have more money than you can burn.

Take for example the creators of Google: Sergey Brin and Larry Page

They each have 15 billion. Each year they receive a salary of 1 dollar from Google. Can you imagine if they were greedy, hoarding types and they actually received full salaries? And they are only 30 years old...

Same with Gates really... he could have WAY more money if he actually cared to still make money.

I'n not surprised - since Vista crashed and burned, after all the hype and bogus glam stunts to promote it.

  18. Luck and free markets.

    edit.

In a sign that the global economy could be improving, the average net worth of the world's billionaires is now $3.5bn, up $500m from last year.

    I lol'd, and :/.

  19. He's been richest by some measures before if I recall correctly.

The top spot regularly changes hands based on fluctuations in stock value so it's not that surprising...
