If someone is bound to defy authority from the start, the strength and number of the restrictions do not matter. Only when the punishment enforced is far greater than the former will any form of consideration be given; a few years in jail compared to the death sentence.
Artefact's point is that there MUST be a disconnection between the offending material and the person's behavior. The argument makes the assumption that a connection between the offending material and behavior exists, where the offending material is a substitute for his behavior to act on.
That's why it doesn't work.
