Following the example of the UK, Asia's Jesusland the Philippines has approved a bill on the committee level of Congress banning "hentai", which they inexplicably define to be the "Japanese pornographic cartoon that depicts children in explicit sexual activity". According to the bill's proponent, even textual or audio material that "advocate explicit sexual activity with a child" will be covered by this prospective law with punishment ranging from 6 to 12 years imprisonment and fines up to half a million pesos (around $10,000). The likelihood of the bill becoming law is high, considering how the concept of freedom of expression might be foreign to a country that boasts a notable murder rate of journalists and where a large percentage of the population identifies themselves as Catholics or Christians.
Authors of the bill includes a member of BUHAY, a de-facto religious ultra-conservative group, and a member of Gabriela which can only be best described as the feminazi party. It should be worthwhile to note that general elections will be held May next year and that public works like road reconstruction boasting billboards emblazoned with images of their proponents seem to have strangely proliferated over the last few months.
Loli connoisseurs however should not be too alarmed considering how movie and software piracy, pornography, prostitution and other practices still proliferate and are actually easily accessible despite their questionable legality.
Fortunately, the Philippine constitution and jurisprudence are based more on their American counterparts and if ever the bill becomes law, it would only be a matter of time before it is struck down by the Supreme Court for its unconstitutionality. Hopefully.
