  2. I quite enjoyed Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works.

Something I forgot to mention before was that before all the anime movies being screened right now, there's a trailer for the Trigun movie, which is a wonderful little bit of nostalgic fun. The animation looked surprisingly old-styled, but it's not very long, so I can't say much.

The King of Thorn movie also has a pretty promising trailer...

On to the Fate movie: the most obvious difference between theatrical anime adaptations and original series (for me at least) is the improved production quality, and that especially helps such a an action heavy title like Fate.

Rin and Saber looked absolutely gorgeous through the film, and being based on the UBW storyline from the game, there's an absolute treasure trove of lovely Rin shots. The movie is worth watching for those alone!

It's also a long movie, over 2hrs in length, and does seem to lag quite a bit in some places. I personally dont mind something like this being overly long, but Im sure others might disagree.

Thinking about the wonderful scenes with Rin made me realize I dont own nearly enough character goods of her, also!

    Tonight, Nanoha!

  3. Heh. Hearing about you watching all these new movies in Japan is making me jealous. I wish I could have seen Disappearance on it's premiere; it actually came out on a pretty special day for me. Which makes it somewhat special.

As for Fate, I can't really comment on that since I haven't played the game nor watched the anime yet. But I will eventually once I get through all of the shows that came out this season. But any way, I can't wait to hear the rest of your report about your otaku movie going experience.

  5. Just wanted to pop in and say I finally got around to making a new Sankaku article, on the Tokyo Anime Fair's Animation Awards for 2010. (Link here)

It should be up on the frontpage soon, and do excuse any typos and possible paucity of images, as making a news article from a manga kissa is not the ideal environment for me...

    4 hours to Nanoha!

I agree. Rin doesn't get much attention as its mainly more focused on Saber. More of a Rin person myself so I can understand how you feel. Its really hard trying to get anything of her as she doesn't get produced often, whereas there are a gazillion Saber stuff out there

  11. I saw Nanoha last night at the Cine Libre in Ikebukuro, one of the theatres offering the repeat points card for repeat watchers of the movie I mentioned in my Nanoha Movie Premieres article.

The option of 3 visits for a film cel has long since expired, and so I decided just to go for the one-visit prize of a nice mini-poster of the movie.

As for the movie itself, it certainly had the substantially improved production quality you'd expect of an anime movie, although it was wasn't nearly to the same extent as the Haruhi movie, or even the Fate movie. Many scenes or particular frames, especially in the first fourth or so, of the movie wouldn't have looked out of place in Strikers, but that subsided mostly after Fate's introduction.

This is of course a remake, and as someone mentioned to me recently (perhaps here, or on the IRC channel), it can be problematic trying to squeeze an entire series's story into just one movie. The movie was 2hrs 10min long, so it did manage to fit in a lot of the story of the first series into it, although invariably a lot of liberties had to be taken with the story. The TSAB police section especially was cut down from the original series, I thought.

The slightly different character designs used for the movie were of some concern when they came out at first, but seeing them in the movie made me forget all about that - everyone looked fine, and Nanoha and Fate both looked fantastic in their first transformation sequences (especially Nanoha's, which just went on for ever!)

The fanservice was especially nicely animated, and plentiful. ^^

The movie had a roughly episodic feel, broken into maybe 4 or 5 smaller arcs, so it actually ended up feeling longer than even Shoushitsu, as if you were doing a Nanoha marathon.

I quite enjoyed it, and Im sure most any Nanoha fan would also. I look forward to Nanoha 2nd, which should cover A's, as the movie's pamphlet/booklet that I bought make some references to.

In case anyone wonders what sort of people are going to these movies besides me, it's 95% otaku adult men including some grey-haired folk, with maybe a half dozen or less women at the screenings. I might have saw a middle-schooler boy at yesterday's Nanoha, or it might've just been a particularly short man, I wasn't paying too much attention.

The audience also seems to be making a similar sort of movie-circuit as I, as I've seen quite a lot of the other movie's pamphlets being read, i.e., a Haruhi booklet at Nanoha, Fate at Shoushitsu, etc.

I also have been the sole gaijin at all these movies so far, which I found amusing. ^^

It's only 4PM, but I just finished a massive 10km meandering circuit through Taito city, so I need to go rest...

I've taken some pictures of the movie lobbies and the pamphlets (all of which cost about 1000yen to buy), Ill get around to uploading them at some point.

I'm about to step away from the comp and won't likely be back at one for a while, perhaps tomorrow or late tonight, but which leaked pic are you referring to?

Yes, that's from the movie, just a few minutes after the fun OP sequence. And yes, it's who you think it is. ^^

I mentioned my trip at the end of my Haruhi Movie Premieres article, in a quotebox!

I lived in Tokyo in 2003-2004 (I'm 27 right now), this time it's just an otaku movie trip.

  18. I'm very curious about the UBW movie. Is there any big parts from the UBW route that didn't make it into the movie? How did the movie handle the Rin x Shirou sex scene (they didn't use another cg dragon did they) and the white dress Saber scene? I'm dieing to know if the movie used the normal end or the good end but if you don't want to spoil the movie than that's fine. Also, did the movie only use material from the UBW route or did it take bits and pieces from the other routes like the anime did (or did it include new material as well)?

Rin is my favorite Type-moon girl though Saber comes in a close second so I don't mind all the focus that she gets, but I really wish Rin would get more attention (they also rank 2nd and 3rd on my list of favorite 2D girls). Due to the nature of FSN, it makes sense that servents would be the main focus of the series (Saber still plays a big role in Rin's route) and get the most of the merchandise.

I'd rather have a Fate zero OAD series, followed by either Fate/Tiger Colosseum OADs or a Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya anime.

    Also, TRIGUN FUCK YEAH!

  19. Thank you Quen for this on the scene reporting. Please bring back lotsa pics! I loved how you described the events and quality of the artwork. I'm sooo jealous! You remind me of Madarame from "Genshiken", you seem like such an expert.

The passion in your voice was so heart felt and earnest. You do otaku's proud. I just want to sop you up with gravy and biscuit! You're older than I first thought. Did you post a pic? It's so annoying there's no pm or I.M. features.

    Don't stay away long!

It's been a long time since I first learned of UBW's storyline, so my memories are a bit sparse, plus the movie was a few nights ago and Ive been in a sort of otaku daze this entire time, I must admit.

It was a pretty straightforward adaptation of UBW from what I could tell, no huge plot points were excised.

There was no sex scene in the movie, and unless I missed a softly spoken line or significant stare in one of Rin/Shirou's scenes, there wasn't even a suggestion that they did.

Saber spent a good chunk of the movie chained up in her white dress, giving us a lot of excellent camera angles and moaning/grunting.

As for the ending, it was *mostly* the better ending (true ending), but did not follow the game precisely IIRC.

Some of the people on IRC have a picture from a convention that had multiple people in it that I've said I'm in, but no, I havent wanted to post one here, hehe.

The Sankaku Channel has a Message function, and my name is simply Quen there too. quen@sankakucomplex.com works also.

I'll try to post some pictures here in a few moments, actually.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, also. ^^
