As crowds pack the areas around Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo for the annual cherry blossom season, a local masters student has created a manga-themed "Moeru Trash Bag" to try and keep the traditional garbage problem under control.
With the name a play on the words for "burnable" and "cute," the bags are the brainchild of 25-year-old Keio University student Masamichi Hayashi, who is studying regional promotion as part of his research.
After thinking of using a manga-style character to promote Chiyoda Ward, which includes the birthplace of otaku culture Akihabara, Hayashi hit upon the idea of creating a trash bag for the shrine, a famous cherry blossom spot.
Convinced that the name would be a hit, 1.7 million yen was collected -- partly from fund-raising by fellow students, and partly from his own cash -- to have 150,000 45-liter bags manufactured. The Chiyoda Ward Tourist Association offered to handle sales, and also bought a quantity of the bags itself.
The bags are on sale at Yasukuni Shrine and two other locations nearby, priced 350 yen for a set of 10.
According to the tourist association, around two tons of burnable garbage will be collected from spots around the Imperial Palace during the cherry blossom season.
