  1. It was called "Space Battleship Yamato" in Japan but when it came to the States it was renamed "Star Blazers".

In the series the year is 2199 and Earth is facing extinction due to radioactive pollution from the Gamilons. The Queen of planet Iscandar promises the Earthlings a solution if they can reach her planet which lies 148,000 light years away. They have just one year to do this and make a return to Earth before its too late. As one could probably guess, the Gamilons cause many obstacles on the journey.

    According to Wikipedia:

Star Blazers was the first popular English-translated anime that had an over-arching plot and storyline that required the episodes to be shown in order. It dealt with somewhat more mature themes than other productions aimed at the same target audience at the time. As a result, it paved the way for future arc-based, plot-driven anime translations.

  2. I have little or no knowledge with Space Battleship Yamato at all, but I do know that it is one of the key hallmarks of anime.

From the looks of it, this will not reach foreign shores (crappy or not, I know it will not reach definitely). Although the effects looks good!

  3. I've been pushing Yamato around here since before you were a member, man. Get with the program.

"This is Earth command ship 225, "Idiots.""
That's about all there is to say on the matter.

Edit:I really don't understand why there's no way to add a youtube link without it trying to autoembed.

  4. I don't know if this is bad, really. I've seen the series and it was fun to watch. ANNNNNDDD I didn't think that it would be successful enough that it would be a live action.

The series? The Original Yamato? This show was retconned by popular demand after a movie where the main cast died. Without this show, Gundam wouldn't exist. This show gave rise to the honourable enemy in anime. This show was a revival of Japanese Nationalism. This show is only one of the most highly praised anime ever made.

It's awful. It's iconic. There's nothing much I can say about it because it STARTED modern anime.

edit:Okay that's a lie, I know. It had a huuuge impact on modern anime though.

edit2: And when I say awful I mean in a good way.

Those edits were highly necessary. XD

I've never seen the anime at all, but seeing as it influenced modern anime so much, it can't be bad. Also, I like how it has some Japanese nationalistic pride. I'm not a huge fan of nationalism, but Japan al often so drawn back. Some pride was probably in place.

Just like the US to rename it Star Blazers. Probably because it was too nationalistic?
