   Being the great anime theorist that I am, one morning (specificly this afternoon) while in my lab (or shower) I was singing the OP to Lucky Star, when I remembered a friend of mine was talking about the Lucky Star dub.
   Obviously my thoughts trailed off to the moe side of the force, and I found my self asking the question "does moe translate?"

   Obviously the bible tells us moe is the force God used to score over 9000 when he was playing Black & White, subsequently creating the earth.

   But, does moe translate into English very well?
   Obviously the art doesn't change (unless you're 4Kids or someone similar), and the meaning of the words should be the same, minus some localisation, but can moe ever work in English?
   And then I got to wondering about tsundere and loli.

   So I guess the real question is, would I be an otaku if I only watched dubed anime?

   I don't expect that many of you watch dubbed anime either, being that you're here.
   But what do you think about such a potentialy destructive conundrum?

   i watch both dubed and subed anime, i've watched all of lucky star dubed and some worked, some didn't but it was pretty good over all, kuroi and kagami really worked out good and konata had some great moments. but watching dubed anime has nothing to do with being an otaku or not. most of us watch subs becasue it's the most up to date anime as well as some jokes being lost during translation.

   on the subject of moe.....the closest thing in terms of definition would be "addiction", to love something to the point were it can become unhealthy....it' snot really something as much as it is a word that describes how much you love a certain something. but inevitably moe will be incorporated into the anime encyclopedia because there is no translation for it, moe is moe, it's all there is to it.

   You'd be outcast.

   Dubs are 99% of the time done horribly, and 1% of the time they're mweh.
   Dub just don't work for me, the moe does not translate as everything moe sounds like a 60 year old hag trying to sound like a 4 year old.. or just exaggerated in some other way.
   Non moe things are the rare ones that sometimes fall in the previously mentioned 1%... but most of the time they sound like someone is trying too hard as well.

   Then again, I'm from the Netherlands.. luckily nearly everything here (on the telly) gets subbed instead of dubbed. So I might influenced by my own culture..

   PS: Steel Angel Kurumi dub makes my ears bleed.

   2 problems with most dubs:

   1. VAs are trying too hard to fit their dialogue in the airtime the Japanese VAs used.

   2. (Generally the bigger issue) VA direction isn't very good. While I loved Working Designs for their warped sense of humor and their keeping of the original art style of the games they localized, you could tell the VAs in most of the games didn't have a lot to go by and were a bit misdirected, making them seem phony.

   When Disney dubs Ghibli films, though, it's actually really good. They do a good job of directing the VAs because they have the top people in the industry doing that.

   Of course moe doesn't translate well. The concept is something the Western mind hasn't experienced. Moe is not exactly 'cute,' not exactly 'attractive' or any of those adjectives. That is why we imported it and use it, instead of those other words.

   I think if a dub used moe it would definitely a service to us, since we know exactly what they mean.

   Ghibli is an anomaly to me. They get the best of Hollywood to do the dubs, but not typically people that VA for a living, let alone do any narration in their line of work, but are simply actors.

   Somehow it turns out well, possibly because Miyazaki beats anyone with a stick that tries to change one iota of his work without his approval, since some of the original incarnations of Nausicaa were completely butchered, heavily edited sometimes with added content and lost dialog over action, by foreign, mainstream studios.
   Since then he rereleased Nausicaa the way it was meant to be seen, albeit, under the Disney umbrella...

   well i say that they should learn a thing or two about subing from fansubs. there subs are always the static arial white text with black outline that takes up 1/3 of the screen......if they did subs how it's supposed to be dubing wouldn't be such a big problem since we could just switch it back to japanese with good subs......thats the one thing i'm still waiting for the industry to catch on to.

   The thing I noticed most about Japanese seiyuu, is that they really really get into their roll.
   Like, the read all the light novels/ manga, and when you watch them actually perform it's like they are about to die if they don't perform better than anyone ever.
   I really did not like Disneys dub of Chihiro. I believe the original Chihiro was actually the kid's first roll, right?

   i agreed with archer. the Japanese seiyuu really did bring out the characters they voiced. they study their characters carefully,did their homework,and amazed the viewers with their real-like tone;the sad scenes will be sad,the thriller scene will be heart-racing etc. So much different from the dubs one. it was disasterous. imagine the part where the character should sounds sad,but the voice actors just speaks with a dead-flat tone. >_<
