  1. I was surprised that I couldn't find any news on Astro Boy here on Sankaku Complex. The following is a snippet of news that was released on Malaysian newspapers back in January 2009, and I thought it was fitting to share it here:

For the upcoming animated flick, the manga hero is unwittingly made to look more Caucasian.

WHEN they saw the initial designs for Astro Boy in the upcoming computer animated flick, the one thing that the Japanese owners did not fancy was the size of his rear end.

    They found it too small.

Recalled Ken Tsumura, executive vice president of Imagi Animation, the Hong Kong company behind the project: “We had discussions of how round and curvy his body proportions are and we designed him more lean.”

But this did not gel with the estate of Astro Boy’s creator, Tezuka Osamu, who wanted to keep some of the more recognisable aspects of the character.

Tim Cheung, Imagi’s vice president of animation, added: “By request, we needed to have a fuller rear and we added a control where we could control the size of his bum.”

Both men were in town for the recent Siggraph Asia 2008 computer graphics exhibition and conference, where they revealed that half of the animation work for the film, slated for release in October next year, has been completed.

In the 1952 manga, Astro is the creation of Dr Tenma as a replacement for his son who died in an accident. With his android powers and skills, Astro starts fighting crime and injustice.

Since then, Astro has become one of the more popular faces of Japanese culture. The hotly anticipated movie will have Nicolas Cage voicing Dr Tenma and British child actor Freddie Highmore of The Spiderwick Chronicles fame will voice Astro Boy.

Both Tsumura and Cheung admit that when a much beloved manga character makes a leap from 2D to 3D, some changes had to be made.

One of the more challenging aspects, aside from designing Astro’s larger head and arms with respect to his supporting characters, was revamping his kawaii portrayal, said the film designers.

Kawaii is the Japanese term for cute-looking and Astro, in his black spandex and red rocket boots, epitomises that quality.

“He has really big eyes and curly lashes and we had to make him less feminine in some way,” explained Mr Cheung.

That the beloved Japanese icon now looks more Caucasian was never intentional. It was a byproduct of ageing him and tweaking his looks.

Luckily, the Japanese team was open to some of the changes and the updated Astro Boy is now 12 years old, compared to the estimated six from the manga, and sports a shirt instead of being half naked.

Despite the effort to make the character friendlier to a Western audience, certain aspects of the original series, such as its themes of abandonment and acceptance, will remain.

“There are parts where it looks a bit heavier than what animated features deal with, but I think that was an important part of the Astro Boy story that needed to be told,” said Tsumura, who declined to reveal plot details for the film.

Imagi is also making a special 3D version of the movie for the Japanese market.

After Astro Boy is done, Imagi will be updating another Japanese icon, Gatchaman, also known as Battle of the Planets in the West. Since it is not as well known as Astro Boy, the project, about five super-powered teens fighting monsters, is open to interpretation.

Revealed Cheung, “We’re kind of making up our own version based on the original 1970s cartoon.” – The Straits Times, Singapore / Asia News Network

There was the Chun Li movie. There was the Dragon Ball movie. There is the upcoming Avatar The Last Airbender Live Action movie. And now comes this. And they didn't even need to look for a suitable actor. It is an animated movie, yet they still go for the caucasian look rather than recapturing the classic feel. Do I see a pattern here? What would Tezuka say if he were alive today?

I'm not even sure if the upcoming Cachaman would stay true to the original. But alas, dreams are meant to be broken...

  7. I'm kinda torn on the matter but you do have to keep in mind that Tezuka, more so than most Japanese artists in the style, was pretty much directly inspired by what Disney was doing at the time.

Given that this version of Astro Boy could have come from a Pixar film and nobody would have noticed, I find it a subtle yet brilliant homage, myself.

I'm going to be honest here; I hardly see characters in most Anime as being obviously British or Japanese or American or whatever; I see them as characters practically lacking any nationality whatsoever.

Something else to keep in mind is that as Scott McCloud would be very quick to point out is that most cartoon characters, particularly the more super-deformed ones as seen in shows like Astro Boy or Kaiba, lack the specific details in the original art to completely define a specifc nationality or facial style (photorealistic art is on one side of a continuum of detail and the yellow smiley face is on the other, with this tending toward the yellow smiley face, actually). Many times I have heard discussions from people less familiar with anime wondering why all the characters were drawn with facial features more like white Americans or Europeans rather than Japanese people; that's why it would seem that way.

  8. Kamen no Maid guy needs a US movie, it would be great, they could have the fat kid from two and a half men as her little brother.

  9. I always find it hilarious when people bring up race in relation to anime.
A genre which is supposed to be mostly raceless, at least as far as Western versus Japanese is concerned.

  10. Animation is raceless, like Ukonkivi and Muteki stated, but when contemplating animation characters, they obtain white skin, with European features, but with displaced fashion and culture that is only familiar to the Japanese.

  11. Many Fans have a perception of characters in anime as Japanese since it they are from Japan.

I'm ok with them using non-japanese in movies but it would probably urk me if they started making movies based on Japanese heavy anime. They'd butcher them for sure.

Also, Haruhi movie, could it be done? y/n?

impossible. there is not a person out there that could portray her eccentricities as they need to be....also finding characters tha fit the roles of the rest would be a very ardous task.

You do however get some art styles in which the characters appear very Japanese. Blood springs to mind.

Also, how characters dress is key.
Characters dress in often Japanese fashions, such as lolita or kimonos.

    Also, how characters speak.
    All the characters speak Japanese.
Before you say "oh, but its a Japanese product" I have seen various anime in which the characters speak English in certain situations, marking them out as english, also character who are non Japanese often get silly gaijin accents.

Battle Angel failed and became the TV series "Dark Angel", or so I've been told, because the producer couldn't get the rights to make a Battle Angel movie, let alone use the name.

WTF? I didn't know Gigantor or Naruto were coming out live action. Well, maybe the Naruto was hinted at, but I didn't believe it.
At least the all rest are anime classics...

The reason why Hollywood has turned to anime though is because they ran out of awesome comic book characters to do movies on, and they have to wait at least a decade before said superhero can come back in either a campy TV series or new movie series, basically retelling the same story, but from a different director's perspective...
    Happens time after time.

Who knows, of course. If Marvel can do an Avenger Initiative movie, I guess DC can do a Justice League movie as well...
Hah! Listen to me! I don't even read comic books! XP

Despite being American, it is an American cartoon series which focuses upon Eastern Asian mythologies and culture. And people with dark skin. And the cast members are mostly white, with the asians playing the bad guys. And the Fire Nation is going to be played by arabs and indians instead of the Chinese. And it is directed by M Night Syamalan. How fucked up is that?

Also, does anyone remember the very, VERY old rumour (from the early 90s of dial-up internet) about a Live Action Sailormoon by Hollywood with Alicia Silverstone playing the lead?
