Converting Videos?

  1. Hello!

Just though I'd ask this here, becuase I've tried everything and I still can't do it.. Anyway..

I have the series of Kodomo no Jikan on my computer, and I want it on my iPod Touch so I can watch it on the move. Problem is, it's in .MKV file type, which doesn't work on the iPod Touch, so I'd have to convert it to .MP4.

I used my video converter and converted it, perfectly. Video and sound is fine, problem is, no subtitles?

After looking around the internet and downloading about 15 different programs I'm still drawing up a blank. I've tried everything I can think of, converted the video like 40 times in total now.. Still nothing.

If anyone has any ideas on how you can covert it from MKV to MP4 and still keep the subtitles I'd be VERY happy!

    Thank you!

    MKV = Softsub. MP4 = hard sub.
What you need to do is actually encode the subtitles into the video.
Google it, should be some tutorials.

Not tried it, but thats basicly the problem.
In MKV container, the subtitle and audio streams need not be part of the video, rather than in MP4 where the video and audio and what ever else is mixed up into one feed.
Because basicly all the subtitles are, are an .ass file held within the container.

So you actually need to hardsub the video with the subtitles.
After that it should convert with subtitles.

Of course, this is just my understanding of it, and the actual video format plays a roll too......

You're right though.. MKV is simply a format to hold an audio/video/subtitle track.
And then some more most likely since it can reference to external files as well like you see with some series where the OP/ED is released just once and when in the same folder as the episode it will be automatically played. (Or well.. it will be in both MPlayer (for us Linux/Mac OS X users) and Windows Media Player Classic).

So you will need to convert the file in a way the subtitles are actually "on" the movie instead of a seperate text file being floated above it.. unless the ipod touch supports some type of softsubs (doubt it).
mencoder can pretty much encode anything.. but not the easiest to work with.

If you're running XP or Vista you may want to take a look at http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=46198

Thanks for trying, but that didn't work. :\
When you load the MKV video into the program is just comes up with about 50 errors then dies. :/

  10. I finally got it working! This is how I did it:

    http://www.winnydows.com/request.php?33 < Download that.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=5326&file=15&evp=09a6f068a43e764b4db06bb3c12adfa5 < Download this if you are in need of Codecs. For Windows XP and Vista. (Or Window 7) Has just about every codec in the world in it.

Install them both, and open the converter. - No Serial or anything needed. (It's freeware)

Now, open the .MKV using the "Open" button at the top. Now, click the save button and select the folder where your going to save it. (You can also change the name of the file here too.)

Now just click Encode and off it goes, wait about 15 mins. Yeah, it takes forever.. (My other converter can convert a 25 mins long Anime ep in about 3 mins. :\)

But! It will work! And have subtitles! - Sorted. - Of course, I'd say not to use this for converting anything that is not .MKV, becuase it's just so slow..

There you go! Now just drag it into your iTunes, mess around with the name and sync it to your iPod! Yay!

*Goes to watch Kodomo no Jikan*

    Thanks again, CC.

As a bonus, have the background I use for the menu on my iPod Touch. I'm sure you'll remember it.

I was going to use that one too, but it looked weird behind the icons on my iPod menu. - For my lock screen I use this:

Becuase it fits near enough perfectly between the clock and slide bar. :)

you can always toss them into photoshop, make a new document the size of the iphone resolution, and see how it would look like at that rez and size, the problem is the clock and "slide to unlock" bar to cover most of the lock screen.

You'd be surprised what you can do without it.
Most of my best photochops were done in MS Paint, but so many people thought I used a more expensive program.

Sounds to me like the background problem can be solved with a simple photo manipulation software found on most computers nowadays, by applying crops, a resize, and maybe a couple of lightening effects to make the icons pop over the image.

Paint is plenty good enough for any image editing.

It's just it lacks the fine tuning availiable in other programs.
I would rather have paint than painshop pro though....

    And torrents?

I just steal it directly from Adobe, then get a fake cd key.
Or I would do, if I had a copy.
