Even though I use this all the time, I couldn't give a good answer if someone asked me what an otaku was. What is an otaku really?

You could find no less than 100 different interpretations.

Easiest answer would be the equivalent of a nerd or geek. Someone who is a specialist in a particular hobby or interest. Usually an otaku is equated with anime or games, but the japanese use it to refer to other hobbies too.
Regardless, I proudly call myself an otaku of anime, manga, cars, milsim, and others. If someone asks you what an otaku is, tell them to fukkin google it.

Otaku in Japan seems to be a person who is obbsesive about somthing to an unhealthy extent.
But I think it extends to the more nerdish passtimes like anime or computer games more than it does to things like sports(even though gaming can be a sport).I think outside Japan otaku is usualy used as a term of respect, though.
Kinda, as a way for other otaku to show awe at someone's powerlevel, and is not negative at all.
But thats because the only people who really know the word are otaku them self.Posted 6 years ago # -

There's plenty of people who are really into anime who have never heard of the "Akihibara"-type subculture that is a part of anime otakus. These are the people watching Hellsing, Samurai Champloo, Berserk, Ghost in the Shell, NGE, Claymore and other stuff like that. There are different kinds of anime otakus.

I think to be an otaku outside of Japan, you have to actually be part of the subculture though.
As it's quite hard to be an otaku and not spend huge amounts of time online researching anime and looking for subs/dubs.Also, I think otaku need to have diverse anime tastes. A haruhiist, is not an otaku, if they obsess about Haruhi, and only Haruhi, however if it was that whole genre of anime, then it would be ok. I guess.....
It sounds like I'm turning otakuism into some kind of elitist sect....

I don't think you're turning it into an elitist sect. I just think when people on Sankaku say "otaku", they all implicitly agree on the same thing. This is an English speaking website, so everyone will usually mean anime otaku if they don't attach a modifier to otaku.
The subculture surrounding anime otakus seems pretty distinct in Japan, but outside of it, there's all these gray areas. I'm just basing this off my limited observations online which is probably wrong.
I've talked to a person who's apparently been watching anime since the early 90s, and he had never heard of any fanservice shows, didn't know what a visual novel was, didn't know what "moe" meant, had never heard of Lucky Star (wtf!) etc. If I had gone on talking, I might have found out he had never heard of a Con.
Somehow, he's read manga (I've never even read one), and seems to have watched more anime than me, and yet he had absolutely no clue about this specific subculture.

this feels correct. some one who only watches naruto, one piece, and bleach because it's whats "inn" or popular can't really be called an otaku but some one who keeps up to date with the newest series coming out, tracking down fansubs, and keeping up with with the anime world in general on the other hand is instantly identified as such. the easiest way to define it on our side is
"someoen who is obsesed about anime, spends his time on the net looking up information on the forums, listens to lots of anime soundtracks, and reads lots of manga." something along those lines is what i would use.

this si quite shocking, but is probably a good example of someone who isnt' an otaku but rather and anime and manga fan. sounds funny but is probably a good example.

Hmmm, I don't read that much manga. Mostly fapinshi, oops I mean doujins.
Reading Yotsubato! raw too, and I started the .Hack/Ai Buster light novels in about 20 mins.
So I think just a genral knowlage that they exist, along with VN's, like I would expect most otaku to know who type moon were, even if they have never read or watched a type moon production.Talking of OST, know a good place to get them?
Posted 6 years ago # -
when i'm looking for a specific ost i usually google it for a torrent or such, if your looking for a place that lists tons of them so that you can look around i don't know.

i don't quite understand them, i've tried but the problem i find is that i never know when things have changed or not. maybe if the little icon on the bar flashed red or something i'd use it but i just find refreshing the general forum page easier because the threads with new posts i havn't read are underlined. plus it also lets me see if a new article has been posted or not

Bah, whenever I come here, I usually post a comment or two, read the forum, or I have an older article open in the background.
I rarely ever close the tabs for this place. If you look at a lot of my saved FireFox sessions, there are like six or seven little orange triangles in my tabbed websites bar!

Gah! You are a quickdraw responder. I even edited my post once before you posted this!
For me, the Nico charts, the channel, and the IRC fills in the waiting time until the next post. I literally never have to leave.Posted 6 years ago # -
