I think a little girl wants to know why haruhi is so popular. Please lucky channel, enlighten us with your words of wisdom.
I don't mind trying out Haruhi as well.
Haruhi takes the age old philosophy 101 questions of what if we don't truly exist, and gives god the appearance of a beautiful young girl. In a philosophy class you might hear the teacher or a student say, maybe what we see, feel, and maybe our memories don't truly exist. Maybe we are trapped like in the Matrix movie, or just the figments of a guy named Bob's dream. Well this Bob is now Haruhi in the anime world. The reason this question is often asked in a philosophy 101 class is because it broadens the mind into thinking anything is possible, it is not too difficult to understand, and it is a very fun and interesting concept to discuss with new philosophy students. This same method alone helps the popularity of Haruhi.
Giving "god" (in this case I'll go ahead and use the she is God theory) the avatar of a beautiful young girl that is interested in a normal human that the viewing audience can relate too is brilliant. Power is sexy, and Haruhi is not only a sexy character, but she is also eccentric (which deviants who like anime really enjoy "this is also why Yuki tends to be the most popular"). She makes life interesting and brings in other interesting "moe" characters along with her. "Koizumi is for the female fans" Especially with Kyon ha.
The anime combines the traditional school life anime with a proper amount of action and even subtle romance hint. The romance and action are usually subtle and causes the audience to want it more. We keep watching more and more, and the randomness of what can possibly happen next keeps us begging for the next episode.
Haruhi is not only decently original in design it also does things never done before. Playing their episodes out of order was brilliant. Kyoani pushed the series onto the Otaku world. Otaku's became more and more interested because of the stunt more so then the anime, and once they all gathered and watched the anime together, referencing it became easy. The Otaku community has a habit of taking something and making it much more fun. Since the entire Otaku community kept shooting out new pictures, videos, etc on Haruhi it became a staple in anime. I like Disgaea, but not many of my friends have played or watched it so I can't talk about it with everyone. Now every one of my friends have watched Haruhi because the stunt made it so big that we can talk about it amongst each other easily making the series more fun with friendly interaction as well.
Giving the ending theme of the anime a para para dance that is both fun and easy to learn was icing on the cake. The dance became very viral and appeared everywhere. This made it a must do event at conventions, and pushed the anime even farther.
With the combination of the interestingly different storyline, and the stunts that pushed it so broadly into the otaku world it made Haruhi extremely popular and fun for anime fans all around the world.
