Well, not really her birthday. Dec 12 is the day of the so called Miracle at Tepeyac, during which the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an indigenous Mexican, and gave him roses to prove to the priest that he had been visited by the mother of Jesus, and not by the devil. When he gave the priest the flowers, they saw the image of the Virgin printed in his tunic, which this being the 1500s Mexico, silkscreening wasn't likely.

Now that the religious hoopla is out of the way, the real reason to tell you. Today also marks the start of a very Mexican tradition many of you gringos aren't aware of, the Lupe - Reyes Marathon.
You see, from Dec 12 (day of Guadalupe) to Jan 6 (day of the three Magi) one will get shit faced drunk. Why is this celebrated, or how it started, I haven't a fucking clue, just thought I'd share it with y'all, because y'all are fucking drunkwads.
Oh Guadalupe is shortened to Lupe, and the Magi are referred to as Magic Kings (Reyes Mangos) hence the Reyes.
