Popular Posts

  1. We are testing (or rather, have tested and put into operation) a new popular posts display... Hopefully this will serve to give an at-a-glance view of popular content.

On the coding side of things, I'm hoping to be able to add a "most commented" display along the same lines, and perhaps category specific versions.

I am still pondering the design of the display, so any suggestions on this front would be quite welcome.

  2. oh, I thought you didn't like this stuff so I didn't suggest this earlier...

The Popular Post looks messy, and it makes my eyes dizzy just like the tag cloud here in the forums...

It would be better if it looked like the "Recent News", but with an added button for Daily Weekly Monthly...

I think people would would be much interested to click it, if it had thumbnails

If you like it to look like a tag cloud, I would suggest this http://www.ikikata.se/ << on the bottom of the page, there's the tag cloud, it looks cool and fun...

    ******************************************
In the forums, I would suggest this
    __________________________________________________________________
    Topic — Add New » |Posts | Last Poster | Views | Activity
    __________________________________________________________________

    add VIEWS

it would be better if the post could be sorted out by click those above...

  3. It may be possible to get it conforming to the recent news style (I had thought about this), but with the size of the thumbnails it would end up becoming too long to take in at a glance. It's supposed to be a summary type view. Still thinking about this.

I will take your forum suggestion into consideration. Not sure if the tag cloud deserves to stay...

    That is neat.

I'm sure even just text of the title and a small blurb afterward would suffice. If, in fact, the article or gallery was interesting, then a title and description should pique people's interest anyway without needing bells and whistles.

In a different way, RIUVA uses a popularity of given post vs. posts over the entire site percentage of reader interest and popularity, in addition to a "Most Commented Posts" section, which may all-around have a similar effect.

  5. would the popularity be based on replies or views? and teh popular posts thingy on the main page looks fine to me, maybe a thmbnal pic when you mouse over it would finish it off.

  6. Interesting idea on having a single TN - could work, but might be hard to do.

There's already a V2 underway, so hopefully a neater layout is not far off.

  7. this is just something i learned in class this year but wouldn't an iFrame do the job? i have no idea on how to even start o make a site so complex such as this so thats just me and my simplistic mind.

And that's about all it is, trying to use it is a pain in the rear and I question its accessibility..

yes it is not that accessible
I normally don't have a tag cloud on my site, and I wouldn't want one
but after I saw that plugin in, I used it, just for visuals...

  11. Saw the cool new feature. I read all the articles but for someone that doesn't have quite the same amount of time I have, would make good use of it.

  12. as current reader i don`t think they need popular post feature, so i assume you add it in order attract/convert new user.
I suggest remove the daily and remain only weekly and monthly considering the daily post is just below as recent news or set default on either weekly or monthly.
Is true it can easily change just by clicking on it, but it is pointless.
beside, making less hassle for new user is easier to convert them.

I was thinking about the possibility of dropping one category, like daily, or weekly, and having an "all time" tab instead for the most popular posts since the site began.

  14. I am thinking about conversions and highlighting top content for people who may not read everything as so many do.

Due to the volume of posts I think keeping daily is useful, but perhaps instead setting weekly as the default might be better.

All time will have to wait as we only have two weeks of data so far - later I can put it in.

Another issue is that probably at some point all the older more popular posts will be dominated by galleries. A galleries only tab (with them excluded from the others) might be required to avoid looking like an idol crazed hentai site.

A related idea is separate post displays for each category archive page.

Well said, lol. I really don't mind what you do with the popular posts cause I probably won't use it as much. Would be cool if you can separate each of the popular posts into news, gallery, video, reviews and whatnot. Then again that could be a headache to get it working properly...

The front page is borderline content overload, which has caused me to steer clear of other anime blogs and news sites (which will go unnamed) in the past. I think if we begin separating popular posts into too many categories, the effect of the tabs may be lost on users, and the whole most popular thing may be trivialized by the amount of tabs dedicated to different kinds of "popular".

I think the way its set up currently makes it certainly easy for first-timers interested in the best (or worst) of the site, or casual browsers, possibly looking to catch up on older posts. Too much more content in the same area, and I fear it may turn people off and the effect will be lost.

Then again, I feel like I'm making a mountain out of a molehill...
