  2. what anime is for me?? i guess for me it's my life style. before i got really into it i spent most of my time just sitting in front of the tv watching whatever was on but after i bumped into the second episode of evangelion everything changed.

i learned for myself how to "search" the web for the stuff i actually want. i learned were they sold the stuff i actually wanted to buy. i met my best friend when i started playing yu-gi-oh 15 years ago. I learned that anime was superior to just about anything else on tv. i started my hobby of figure and memorabilia collecting. i got both my younger brother and sister into it (though not nearly as much).

Anime is probably the best thing that happened to me and i probably couldn't live without it now. it changed who i was becoming and made me realize that this is what i trully enjoy and will be doing for the rest of my life and will pass down my knowledge to my kids (if i ever have any, i will trully be an interesting dad if that time ever comes.

  3. Oh, I'm dumb, I couldn't understand the OP at first.

I just enjoy anime and I think otaku subculture is interesting. I've talked to my friend before about whether I'm a hypocrite for criticizing pop culture (especially in America) when I'm the one watching fanservice anime and generally being an ani-ota. I haven't been able to decide on an answer so maybe someone can help me. -___-

The rationalization I usually give is that a lot of anime isn't quite as banal as say, some popular TV series in the U.S. I have respect for animators/artists who seem to have a lot of passion for what they do.

it's not an easy question that can be answered in one or two sentences especially since the question can be interpreted many ways so i guess the first step is to refrase the question into something tangible like

"How much does anime mean to you, if it dissappeard tomorrow would it hurt? would you be the same person you are now without it? do you get excited when a series you like gets an OVA or a second season? are you an avid collector of merchandise? if so, then why does it mean that much to you?"

something like that i guess....hopefully it helps.

  5. maybe some will hate me for mine answer, but seriously knowing the reason or not is not really important as it not necessarily to know.

my sole reason is: its good way to kill boredom and it entertain me, that reason alone is pretty enough for me.

  6. Well I'm wondering if there's any real difference between the pop culture of the U.S. and the pop culture of Japan.

Someone might ask me, "What are your hobbies?" I don't have any hobbies except reading and anime. If I wasn't feeling embarrassed, I would answer, "My hobbies are reading and anime." But let's say my hobbies were reading and watching evening sitcoms on CBS, ABC, FOX. If that were so, I would answer, "My only hobby is reading." I wouldn't say that one of my hobbies included watching sitcoms on TV.

I think that says something about the nature of anime. Sometimes anime is unfairly labeled as a "genre", but it is not a genre. It is an entirely different medium.

Another way to think about it: People who collect art will say, "My hobby is collecting art." I might get laughed at for saying this, but I think otakus are art collectors except they collect figurines or whatever instead of paintings.

I realize there's also some confusion here with limited vocabulary. Even though I might say that one of my hobbies is "anime", I'm interested in anything related to modern Japanese pop culture which includes more than that. I just say "anime" because people immediately know what you're talking about.

See what Artefact wrote in the about section of the site: http://www.sankakucomplex.com/about/

No where else in the world will you find fludity between different mediums of entertainment than in Japanese pop culture. There are attempts in the U.S. occasionally, which usually fail unless it's something extremely popular like Star Wars.

Anyway, I always thought anime unfairly gets bashed when people haven't even given it a chance and have only seen what little comes on Toonami or Adult Swim (although AS does play pretty good shows). I think there is more aesthetic value in anime, or at least, a different kind of aesthetic value, compared to other media that are popular today.

It would be worthwhile to state exactly what "otaku culture" actually is. Or what "pop culture" is etc. I was asked this when I was trying to talk about whether I'm a hypocrite for criticizing American pop culture and I didn't know how to answer.

In my case it Fruit Basket. After that I searching the web looking for Fruit Basket info and got some OST and some episode in Japanese and thought : "Dubbing in my country is sucks!", they even dub the opening and ending. Thats the beginning, and suddenly now I'm like this :D
Its hard when I'm on high school but since I enroll college, bunch of my friend is anime lover, although not as hardcore as me :P and most of it because my influence.
Anime is now part of my life. I really don't know what is going to happen when it suddenly gone, I can't, no I don't want to imagine it.
And one thing that sucks in my country, anime is for kids! So when a local station TV aired anime, it ranked as kids show. They ever aired Love Hina at 9am in Sunday you know.

  10. What is anime to me?

It's simply Japanese animation. It encompasses many different genres and is marketed to many different audiences, which is interesting when compared to the lack of variety of animation to come out from the west.
I rarely watch any of it anymore (I mostly read manga instead), but what really interests me is the culture that surrounds it and the culture that is derived or influenced by it (like the Nico Nico community or the Vocaloids).

  11. anime is just a kind of source of entertainment to me since I can get good laugh by watching it

  12. Even though I like reading manga more, anime is still important to me. It seems like the US releases an anime series and then the manga for it, assuming more people would read the title because of the show.

Music, animation style, and voice acting are crucial to me when I pick an anime to watch.
