  1. I found this interesting article on J-cast. According to the article a research survey made by the Rakuten company found that 53% of Japanese man and women in their 40's "seldom read books". When participants in their 30's were asked the results showed that 52% of the women and 47% of the man don't read. To top it all it seems this phenomenon has been on the rise for quite a few years now.

You can read the article here:

The reason for this strange phenomena was not written in the article. But since this is SanCom I'm sure one of you will be kind enough to grant an appropriate answer...

  2. Do manga count? But the reason may be a simple as Japanese in their 40's are workaholics and too busy to read.

  3. The survey was about books and magazines so manga doesn't count.

Not really or all those nippon novels wouldn't sell that well.

  7. I think it's like this. Some people rather recieve entertainment(watch shows) then actualy do something and read it.
Otherwise said the world is getting lazzier and lazzier all the time.

Btw maybe just reading is kinda old fashioned when it comes to all the media they have, like mangas and anime

  8. Without a comparison this statistic is useless. When you get a statistic for the the US, Canada, Britain, or Ausfailure (or any other developed country), then we can proceed to slate the appropriate nation.

  9. In my opinion the unneccessity of the statistic derives from the fact that we can't really connect its content to anything...Only because Japanese in their 30s-40s rather watch TV shows and doramas doesn't mean their literary knowledge is decreasing or similar...

And I agree that employed Japanese have not many free time and rather spend the few hours between two events ( or waiting for train...etc...)by reading manga since it's an easy-to-understand visual media ( that is able to relax the brain a bit after hard work )

  10. The only reading most Japanese do is from mangas. Few read light novels. Practically no one reads real novels or other books unless required to.
