   GANTZ Playboy!
   

   Thought would be an interesting topic as we are an English Otaku style group. I've noticed these videos more & more on YouTube. ENGLISH versions of out favorite Anime OP's. Sure, theses a Fan-Dubs but some have 'High Production' value and I gotta admit I enjoy some of these songs a bit more hearing them with ENGLISH lyrics.

   TORADORA's OP- sung in English:

   I've heard multiple versions of some of these but these are the BEST versions in My Opinion.

   Any thoughts from this crowd would be interesting or if someone has other ones to add - just as long as they're ENGLISH sung I'd be curious to hear them.

   There is a major reason for me enjoying Japanese lyrics or VA's over English. It's the mannerisms. As I only have a basic knowledge of Japanese, I can read basic and understand basic sentences. Beyond that, nothing really. As such, I don't pick up on either specific accents or certain pronunciations of words.

   This is the key component to my venomous relations with English dubs. As a choir singer and a fluent (as much as most people can say at the very least) English speaker, the mannerisms of some VA's or singers bother me. If I catch something that is pronounced weirdly it rubs me the wrong way and takes my concentration away from the episode and I focus on that.

   It's not the actual language that drives me towards Japanese dialog, but the unfamiliarity of the language allows me to focus on the content rather then the presentation and performance.

   Well...yeah. I didn't say English was better. Just thought it'd be interesting to get the 'feel' or mood of a song if one heard it in English. Plus most women can't duplicate the smooth or high-squeak of the Japanese womens voices. I think the Haruhi one is the best cause it sounds like it could've been Wendee Lee (English Haruhi). Plus she sounds 'bubbly' and spunky like Haruhi.

   The Discotheque one is nice cause the women matched the tone & vocal mood of the original artist so I just sounds like English. I've heard her do other songs and they all sound like 'that' - it only works qirh Discotheque.

   I concur...maybe they meant the Lyrical read was good?- LOL. I chose the "Toradora" video cause it was the best 'read' and smoothest version.

    From the ones I've heard, the Haruhi 1st op and ed are good.

    The problem here is twofold:
    For those examples you provided, the sound quality is horrible. With proffesional equipment, better results are yielded.
    Secondly, most Japanese songs sound strange with a straightforward translation. I feel a whole rewrite would do more justice, although losing some familiarity.

    Your opinion is Noted Deth- lol. Let me say Again...This is NOT about which is 'better' or Hey English Rocks!- No, it's merely a curiousity. I prefer the Japanese myself. I love how Japanese sounds when sung. No one's trying to 'sway opinion' here.

    There are other versions sung in Spanish, German, & even Russian- it's more of a Curiousity this thread.

    I never said which was better... I said ~ Keep it Japanese

    I never liked English dubs (and you know that).. its very rare that E-dubs are done correctly and allot of things go missing in the translations, or are changed - *just to* - fit the western style, and so I departed from them.

    I tolerate Bleach Dubs, because I watch it on Saturdays, just to pass the time.

    I also heard several language versions as well... and (to me) anyway... they don't have that zing! as the Japanese versions do.

    I've heard a few good versions where they used multiple languages. There was an ova i watched that used the languages of the character's heritage. I swear there was like 6-8 different languages in that ova. But i don't remember the name.

    Also Japanese shows with English dialogue is funny, but in an awesome way. The most recent at least i remember is Eden of the East. But that was like for the first episode only cause they were in Washington D.C.

    I'm glad you included Cristina Vee. She's actually a voice actress. She does the english Nanoha. Love her for that alone.

    Anyway, there's something you forgot to mention gantz. There are officially english dubbed songs. Like:

    I did a thread very much like this one in another forum a long time ago. The only response from that old forum that stood out was that people generally liked Beck's english version more than the japanese.

    Just to add some more randomness, there are rare occasions like kuroshitsuji where the original song was in english.

    other official one of the top of my head are well ALOT of the stuff funimation releases but one of the most memorable ones was lodoss war OVA. Sry too cold for some reason to search for vids maybe getting sick.

    when I sleep I leave the tv on so when I wake up most times kiddy grade is starting like 3am to 4am so I guess when im half sleep it embeds itself in my head XD

    Man i wish had that channel here. But anyways i own that series on dvd one of many many series. I find it interesting when they find a singer who sounds alot like the original. BTW i also sleep with the tv on but i also have a fan going and i tunes on my comp.
